If you want a device that works the way you want it to work, not the way Microsoft forces you to use it, it's simple - get another player. They are making more money with their heavily locked-down approach, and they're not going to give up on that easily. Of course they could implement MSC or "normal" MTP, but they never will.
Maybe there will eventually be apps like those various iTunes replacements (Doubletwist, YAMIPod, Sharepod) for the Zune, since theres always certain people being pissed off by patronizing, limiting monocultures.
