Just bought my S9 32gb and LOVE it!! Out of the box it has Firmware 2.50 installed. Do I really want or need 2.51?

nothing new about this update so it depends if you just want your s9 to be updated.. i'd stick to 2.41 though.

I have read about a couple of folks with the 32GB S9 like mine, upgrading from 2.50 to 2.51 and bricking the unit. there is a current thread on it right now in fact.
could just be coincidence, but I'm not sure. I was hoping my recent S9 purchase would have 2.51 on from the factory, but it came with 2.50. I will sit tight for awhile to see what happens. |

it only has some minor fixes, but firmware updates are generally a good idea

I haven't had any problems since I upgraded to 2.51 either. I have a 32 GB S9. The bricking reports did scare me though. Next time a firmware update comes out, I will probably wait longer to hear more about other users' reports unless there was a major fix or upgrade in functionality that the firmware offered.

http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=32771 and it appears that people bricking their players are just people who don't know how to safely disconnect their harddrives (which really gives them no right to complain, since you can destroy any mass storage device doing that). It's some comfort to me, since it suggests the firmwares are fine. Although it would be nice if the S9 had a proper recovery mode... In case of a power outage or a bluescreen it would be nice not to worry about the s9 dying. My computer has bluescreened plenty of times with my ipod and external harddrive plugged in, and they still work fine. |

I crashed for the first time after the upgrade, but I just reset it at the back. And as long as you keep your S9 in MSC mode, then you can unbrick it by formatting it.
You might find its just random coincidence though..
