Know of anything decent for that price range?
(Any general thoughts about noise isolating earbuds are also welcome as I've never had any before) |

JVC Marshmallow/Air Cusions are both around $20 and are pretty easy to get in most places.
Isolating earphones are pretty good, but it's kind of dangerous in public and could hurt your ears after prolonged periods. But that's just general opinion. For me, I can't wear anything that doesn't isolate sound in some way.

Second vote for the JVC marshmallows, you can find them for around $10 to $14 on the net. But at the same time order some good tips too.

Re "could hurt your ears after prolonged periods": why is that? Just because of the way they fit in your ears? Okay, I don't really know anything about tips -- so would I be looking for tips specific to JVC marshmallows or are things slightly more generic (size based)? |

Re "could hurt your ears after prolonged periods": why is that? Just because of the way they fit in your ears? /QUOTE] yeah pretty much. And this is related to the tips as well. If you have tips that doesn't fit your ear properly, then not only will it not isolate as well, it won't be as comfortable in your ear and might start to hurt after awhile. To me, this only ever happens when I use them nonstop for around 5 hours or more. Yeah, I listen to music nonstop for 5 hours. It's because I'm cool like that.

I highly recommend the marshmallows as well, but I would also say you should give the stock tips a try before you go ahead and buy new ones, just because everyone's tastes are different. I loved the ones that came with the mallows, but others may not.

I too, say go for the Marshmallows. If you're concerned about the ear-tips, then just buy some different ones AFTER you've tried the stock ones. They fit my ears perfectly though, so...I have no complaints!

I finally bought some after Christmas. Silver, as you can see from my sig.
And... they've been pretty decent so far. Bear in mind, though, I have no previous experience with noise isolating IEMs. That being said, they seem to fit fairly decent. Felt kind of weird at first but now I'm used to the feeling. I kept grinning when I was first using them (playing Halo over LAN) and so that would mess them up a bit. ![]() They do sometimes hurt my ears after a while (because of fit, I think). I'm using the tips that came on them. They did come with a set of what seems to be slightly bigger tips; I haven't tried them because I bet they'd be too big. I've been pretty happy with the noise isolating capabilities. They don't completely block all sound, but playing music with them in works pretty great... I don't have to dial up my music a lot and struggle to hear it in noisy environments, which is awesome. Already used them once on a 6 hour round trip (Moscow, Idaho, if you want to know). Did well, even though I could still hear some care rumble. Maybe that has to do something with noise transmission through the car. |
