Hi, I have spent hours reading posts about MP3 players, on these forums, and I finally decided to make an account.
I'm going to buy an MP3 player, I have spent hours on end reading reviews, and watching videos about countless MP3's and I managed to narrow down my choice to the "Samsung YP-R1 R'Mix" "Sony Walkman NWZ-S738" I used to own a Sony Walkman NWZ-S616, and from experience I know that the menu of the S series are convenient and good, the only thing I'm hesitating about now is sound quality. I want to know how the sound quality of the Sony Walkman NWZ-S738 compares to the Sony Walkman X1000 series. I also want to know about the sound quality of the Samsung YP-R1. P.S: I have read reviews, and they all say that both the sound quality of the sony and samsung are excelent, but I doubt it, to be honest, so thanks for your help. |

What iems are you going to be using? Because both the Sony and R1 will sound good.

Dreamnine is correct, Sony and Samsung both produce great sound, as long as you have decent earbuds/IEMs/headphones.

Well, I can't really afford to buy good headphones, which is why I'm leaning towards the sony.
Thanks guys, do you think the headphones that come bundled with NC are any good (With th sony)? Oh and is it also true that the R1 can only be used in landscape? and martian, what do the S545 sound like (I'm a major lurker) Last edited by Ahmedbasil1; 12-04-2009 at 07:55 AM. |

Those NC iems are pretty good for stock buds - you'd have to spend around £20 upwards to get anything better. And, if that's a factor, I'd say go w/ the Sony because the buds Samsung supply are meh..

hmmm, okay, lets say that headphones aren't a factor, do you think I should go with the sony, or samsung. I care mostly about sound quality.
Thanks for your help dreamnine, and martian, I appreciate it :P |

Ahmed, I think it sounds really good. The included earbuds were cheapies, from what I am told(I included them with the Sansa Clip I sold without ever trying them. ) But with different headphones I really like the sound, and the custom EQ and Clear Bass let you tweak your sound nicely.
It's my first Sony MP3 player though, so I can't compare it to any of the others.

There's little difference in SQ between the players.

Thanks, I know the S730's sound at least as good as the S545's, and the S730's come with half-decent headphones... I'm already familar with its menu style, and I like its battery life and size... I think I should go for the Sony.
Again, thanks Martian, and dreamnine. Okay, sorry I'm being a pain, one last question, is 99 pounds good for the S738, from amazon : amazon.co.uk |

That's a lousy deal btw. You could get a 16GB E series for £70: http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/...kman.3942.html
Or the cheapest I could find for the S545 is £99 - again for 16Gb. |

This review puts me off of the S545 though, I'm not sure if it is a biased review site or not : http://www.trustedreviews.com/mp3/re...WZ-S544-8GB/p1
The E445 actually looks quite awesome. here EDIT: on amazon, the E is advertised with 2 audio enhancing tchnology, wherelse the S is advertised with 4 audio enhancing technologies.... I just dont know! btw why do sony have so many walkmans >.< Last edited by Ahmedbasil1; 12-04-2009 at 08:29 AM. |

The new E series are supposed to be good - and that's a good price. But I don't think they're better than the S545.
Either way I wouldn't pay that for an S738, because it's a discontinued model. |

I do agree with that review that the speakers on the S545 are kinda silly. But when I bought it, I didn't know if the new generation E-series was improved over the garbage old models or not, so the S-series seemed like a safer bet. I don't do playlists, so the lack of SenseMe doesn't bother me....and I have another player for podcasts, so that didn't bother me either. I do use the dynamic normalizer, because in shuffle all mode, some of my older albums are at totally different volumes from newer ones....it makes them louder,to match the newer tracks, and it does not add any distortion that I can hear.

Hmm, well I think I'm going to go ahead and order the S738, I have a gut instinct that it's awesome, o.O, as I said I had an older S616, and I loved that player so much, If this is the same, but with added SQ and NC, then I can't go wrong.
Thanks for everything, this is probably the most responsive forums I've ever used. ![]() edit: Martian, thanks for the opinion, but as you said, I feel the S is a safer bet, to be honest, Im waiting for the A840, but thats coming out in a few months, but I can't live without music. |
