Default E445 data transfer problem WMP 12

Hi,

I just purchased an E445 but previously ripped all my CDs to (non-DRm'd) AAC format (m4a). The E445 can play the files but when transferring using WMP 12 (my OS is Windows 7) the player automatically converts the m4a files to WMA. I want to prevent this as it degrades the sound quality but can't see how to do this. AFAIK when using MTP the device "tells" WMP the file types it supports and based on this information, WMP will decide whether conversion is required. Is this a known problem, or am making a basic mistake? For now I'm using Explorer to transfer files but playlists are a bit tedious to sort out.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Jim

You're going to have to look through all the various options of WMP. I don't have Win7 yet, so I can't look all through it, but in the older WMP you could turn off any conversion. The problem may be that WMP might not like the m4a format.

Marvin,

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I've been digging around a bit in Technet and apparently it isn't possible to disable conversion with MTP devices:

Also it seems there's a bug in WMP 12's handling of m4a files with MTP:

So it looks like I'll have to stick with Explorer for file transfer until Microsoft release a bug fix. C'est la vie.

Best wishes.

Jim

That's a bummer Jim. So they'll play fine, you just can't make a playlist?
Maybe trying a different media manager might help....Winamp, MediaMonkey, etc. It's worth a shot if playlists are important to you. I guess I'm lucky I don't use them, because my Sony S545 is also an MTP device.
