Default Need an amp..... fiio E5 looks nice... but..

Okay, I no squat about Amps, except for the fact that your music would sound better with an Amp. The Fiio E5 is affordable ($20 CAN), looks good, has a clip, but when I read the description, it said volume extender/booster. So does it really make your music sound better, or is it just a volume booster?

Any better recommendations?

(Must be under $50, that's the max, because I still have to save up for the Zune HD!)

Thanks.

Depends on the player and headphones. Most of the time it'll just make your music louder. On some headphone/player combinations it can improve other things. What are you going to do with it? What do you want it to do?

Amp is not the magic ingredient that makes every DAP sounds better. There are pretty of cheaper or more obvious way of getting a better sound.

First, get some high quality music files: 256kbps or 320kbps mp3 or wma, even lossless if you player supports the format.

Second, get rid of the stock eaubud. For $50, you can get either a Yuin PK3 ($40 earbud), Sennheiser MX760 ($20 earbud, genuine on eBay), NuForce NE6 ($40 basshead IEM), or Apple dual drive IEM ($35 genuine stock on eBay, analytical sounding). In fact, there are many earbuds or IEM under $50 that will sound great w/o an amp.

You will want an amp if 1) the headphone-out sucks and you want to use the line-out. 2) You already own an good headphone that is known to benefit from the extra power. 3) You already max out on other options and want to try an amp to extract the last few bit of SQ out of the player. 4) You have money to burn, so why not?

If your music library consists mostly of 128kbps mp3 files and you are using stock headphone, then perhaps you want to reevaluate your options. Don't buy an amp just because you read it somewhere else that it is great - you might not get the same benefit as others did.

Sorry to dig this old thread up, but where can you get a E5 for $20 in Canada? I'm in Toronto, and I seriously regret not buying an E5 with my purchase of a pair of RE0.

is this cheap amp really going to help what I would consider expensive earphones? What mp3 player do you plan to use it with?

The FiiO E5 won't make your RE0 sound better in any way, it actually would make the sound quality worse in a few aspects.

Of course, if you want to pair the inefficient 64 Ohm RE0 with a quiet player like the Sansa Clip or similar, you'd really need an amp to achieve acceptable volume levels.

I have an Archos 5, and the volume limit on the player limits power output to 8.6mW.

So yes, I do think I need an amp.

What do you mean it would make the sound worse?
