Sony NWZ-X1050 Won't Mount on Linux Debian Lenny

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if you could help. I just got an X1050 since I thought the player would revert to removable disk if I'm not on Windows like it said it would.

However, whenever I try connecting it, an icon pops up that says "Sony Walkman," but when I try clicking on it, it says "Unable to Mount Media" and "There's probably no media in the drive."

I'm stumped here. I have another Sony Product (Sony Reader) that's said to work the same way: Windows only but reverts to removable disk on everything else.

So, I really don't know what's up. I Really really do not want to use windows man.

Please help!

Ok. I am using GNU/Linux for more than 12 years, and already stayed away from Microsoft OS since 2000 . Hope I can help you.

Yes, that is totally weird. I assumed the you fdisk -l at the different device.

Now, from, your 'correct' fdisk, you can see that the partition table is not correct.
My suggestions:

1) Backup your songs/files with other system/OS.
2) Correcting the partition

Does it mean that the partitions in the player itself are messed up or the partitions on the computer? If it's the player, how come it works with my wife's laptop? If it's the player, can I simply format the player?

Actually, if you followed the solution in the link, I don't think it is hard. The testdisk apps is a data recovery tool, and able to repair partition related issues. As I mentioned earlier, you have to backup your files first, and start repairing/repartitioning. After you repartition, you can try to access it using your netbook. Then, you format it using the player's format function.

Ok, I ran testdisk. Analysed the player's drive. Not sure if it fixed it though but it does look different from before (fdisk -l /dev/sdd):

Analyze do not repairs partition. you need to go further... If you backed up your files, then no need to be worry.

Ok, I did a detailed investigation.

1) If you format the internal memory storage, fdisk -l will shows

# fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512)

Disk /dev/sdb: 31.8 GB, 31879856128 bytes
1 heads, 32 sectors/track, 486448 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 32 * 2048 = 65536 bytes

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sdb1               1   134217728  4294967294   ff  BBT
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.

As you can see, the partition start from block 1 and finished at 'nirvana' : (2^32 -2) Normal partition should starts from block 2 and ends at 31132608
Notice the partition type.... it should be 0b (FAT32)

2) But, on my Slamd64 GNU/Linux, I can mount it eiher with /dev/sdb or /dev/sdb1 without any complaint.

So in your case, you can try mount it with.... (if your X is /dev/sdd)
0) create a mount point : # mkdir /mnt/sony
1) # mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/sony
or
1b) # mount /dev/sdd /mnt/sony

And see whether your system complaints. If everything in order, your X can be accessible through directory /mnt/sony

Please remember umount the mount point before you pull out the usb cable
# umount /mnt/sony
and wait until you get the command prompt.
