no portable device connected

Up until recently I had no problems, however, now when I connect my iriver clix to my laptop, the iriver plus 3 program does not recognise that I have in fact connected. (no portable device connected)
However, the clix is still able charge but the music contents of the clix do not appear and so I am unable to make changes.
Can anyone please advise me with this and how to resolve. I have not tampered with any settings. thanks alex
