Default Excellent video editing software wanted
Does anyone know of any video editing software that can:

take a wide range of formats
offer a lot of different effects (sounds etc)
process the video fast
still be around $40AU or better... FREE

I am sick to death of movie maker and its ickyness . I'm currently doing a video for an english assessment, and I DON'T want to do the movie maker scene again. .

virtualdub is the best free option I can offer, but I think it only works on AVIs. If you can't find a software that does all the formats you want it to, convert them using Super.

I use Vegas Pro 8.0, only problem is it costs over $250.

Vegas Movie Studio is a cut-down version of the above - about 40GBP - not sure how much in Australia. It will do what you want though it behaves differently to most editors.
Also Google "free NLE" (as in non-linear editors).

you could also search google for open source video editing programs. You may find some good results. Open source is always better (IMO) it's free and is open to additions/modifications by anyone, so it usually will work just as good or even better than professional software (Gimp vs photoshop for example)

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have found one suitable for my needs after a discussion with my uncle. To answer my own question (lol) I am using a free trial of a program "corel video studio".
