Default "There are no files on this device" error

I've had my sansa e280 for over a year so I'm not new at this. Recently, I've started having problems with the player's sync and playlist functions--but one at a time.

The sync. My player seems to sync fine. All the files transfer to the player but when I disconnect it and then reconnect it, it says that there are no files on Windows Media Player. It says this in both MTP and MSC modes. When I go to the device on My Computer, I can see all the music after I decheck the Hide Files box but they don't appear on Windows Media Player.

I've updated the firmware, tried formatting... I also recently installed Rockbox, partially because I hoped that it would help (but mainly just because I like it). No luck.

Any ideas?

EDIT: ...oh joy. So, I decided to try to get a blank slate and format but it won't even let me do that. I try and it says Unable to format.

EDIT 2: Right, so I had to do a System Recovery but I'm back to square one: "There are no files on this device."
