Default Android on Archos 5
ABI article

Will the Android OS be a firmware upgrade or would I have to wait until it was released on brand new Archos'?

Knowing Archos and their past performance it is highly unlikely that they will make it an upgrade, it is my bet it will be a new device if you want android.
