30gb Zen freezing problem during sync

I have a 30Gb zen which has been going strong for a few years now.

However, when I was syncing with WMP 11 the other day, I realized that it had completely stopped. WMP wasn't frozen but the progress bar wasn't moving at all. On the Zen, the animation for the 'Docked' screen was frozen. Plus, the 'battery charging' animation was also frozen.

So I assumed that the Zen was frozen, so I disconnected it. The screen didn't change. I reset it and tried to sync it again, but the Zen froze exactly like before.

So I went into recovery mode, formated it, cleaned it up, and reinstalled the newest firmware, but I still have the same problem.

(I noticed that when this happens, I can hear the HDD go 'Clunk' then completely stop.)

So, what is my Zen's problem? Do I need a new HDD?
