Not to be sarcastic, but when you press and hold the back button and down on the pad, you'll know it's off when the display goes off. You have to keep them both pressed until this happens; it takes a few seconds, and the screen will scroll down while you're doing it. You don't have to restart it to do this, just do it from normal operating mode.
