Default Coby

I was looking around the MP3 players at jr.com and they have a great deal on Coby players, if coby has adequate quality. What do you think of Coby MP3 products?

I think Coby is a low end electronics maker. The kinda of stuff that many Walmart shopper would buy on price alone.

Just what comes to my mind when I think of the brand.

But at least is not an iPod, though probably a step down from one.

Coby is the bottom of the barrel, and ranks below Maxell for mp3 players. Stay away from their products, please. I've heard them BTW, total garbage.

Not very true, in fact they make pretty good disposable MP3s, they are dirt cheap and it is not fair to compare them with iPod.

You owe me a keyboard.

I bought a Coby several years back, just on price. It has by far the worst sound quality and worst user interface I have ever seen. Even with good earphones, they still sound bad.

It is amazing to me how they seem to be so "proud" of their stuff.

According to Wikipedia, (the most trustworthy source of information ever) they will be extending their line into UMPC's. OMG.

Smilies are cool.

Coby's audio chip cannot tell the difference between high end and low end. Every sound ends up somewhere in the mid-range. Seems like they ripped the audio chip out of a GBA and stuck it in their player. =]

Here's a test to see if you'd like a Coby player.
1) Would you buy headphones to use instead of the phones that come with your player, or would you use those and be happy with them?

If you answered no, go for the Coby player, because no matter what, music is most likely going to sound the same through that Coby or a Cowon D2 using those 'phones.

I have a GBA Jukebox, an MP3 player that attaches to a GBA.

It sounds better than the Coby. And has a better user interface.

Yeah, but I remember an mp3 player that I found at a used game store; they let me try it on my GBA. It used the GBA's sound chip, and ran through the GBA headphone port. I never thought the GBA was able to resample mono(yes.. it was mono)

It looked like a un-branded gba cartridge, which had an sd slot on it. I can't find it online, but if anyone can, I'd love to laugh at it again.

Seems like Coby is even jumping in on the IEM market.

"High-definition 10mm neodymium drivers are optimized to produce pounding bass and crisp highs"
Pounding Bass? Crisp Highs? High-Definition? The only thing I heard from Cobys are lower mid-range sounds. And that's it. I can further optimize their neodymiuim drivers... with my hammer

So I have a co-worker with a 30GB iPod Video that he got off somebody else, for a toolbox or some such thing. Most of his listening has been through the crappy work stereo because his Coby earbuds broke on him. Out of the goodness of my heart, I brought him the Sansa buds that came with my Clip(never opened, and white to match his iPod), and he said they sounded ten times better than the Coby's. That says it all, I think.

HA! The Sansa buds? I gave them away because I can't stand them. I can't imagine Coby buds.

Compare the Coby players to something that is the same price! It is unfair to compare them to much higher priced players. No one expects the Coby players to perform like Cowon players. I was browsing the J&R website and noticed this player for just $12. I would rather have this than a Coby player. This player isn't perfect, but if someone is looking for a player under $20, the choice should probably be the Trekstor ibeat xtension, or the Sandisk Slotmusic Player. The Slotmusic Player has no display though. Have you seen any players under $20 that run on a AAA battery which you think are better than the xtension or the Slotmusic Player? The first negative I noticed for the xtension is just 8 hours battery life. It has a full sized SDHC card slot though, and navigates by folders or tags. The card sticks out from the player though.

Forgedditaboutit!!!!! - Coby sux!!! Doesn't matter what brand or price point it's compared in, as even crappy Chinese players seem to have better sound and build quality.

I've had a few pairs of Coby buds, gotten with a few cheap devices that were bought to be "throw away" (actually, bought to use at work where there was a very big risk of theft). The only thing I've found worse, aside from the old transistor radio earphones with the metal disc for a "cone", are "Sentinel" brand phones available at Big Lots. Even my 15-year-old Radio Shack earbuds sound better, but I think there are actually re-branded Koss buds.
