i've done a little research, and i think i may do that. the 605 80GB wi-fi is around 220USD, has an external speaker, kickstand, wand for touchscreen, web browser...
i mean, for 20USD less, that seems pretty worth it. the only thing that's really better with the s9 is the SQ and VQ, and the scratch-resistant screen. and maybe the massive flash support. Does the 605 have flash? could i put my own .swf files on it? and does the web browser cost money?

You're also missing the fact you'll be downgrading the screen from OLED to TFT, Battery life will dramatically drop to well below half on both Audio and video.
From what I know the 605 has Flash and the web broswer comes with it as a free upgrade but everything else like HD video streaming isn't free. I'd stick to the S9 unless you feel 16gb is inadequate. |

i'd mostly like the 605 for wi-fi, and believe it or not, the little kickstand that holds it up so you can watch things. the speaker, and 80gb are a huge bonus though.

They're both great players, but the extras do add up on the 605. The web browser alone costs $30. I had a 605 but the screen broke and I now have an S9 and I have to say they're both great players. Yes, the 605 does have flash support. To answer your question, it all depends what you want in your player.

i am actually selling my Archos 605 80GB for the S9 =) the Archos is a good player but the touchscreen is more like a "press screen" unlike the iTouch, you cant "speed scroll" down the list of songs like the S9. you have to drag it with your finger. The battery life is too short too and after a while you have to open it up and solder a new battery into it cause it doesnt have a removable one and like mentioned before, web browser costs money. |

i don't think battery life will be a problem, the most i use my pmp's is on the bus to and from school, and in study hall...that's about 3hrs total, so 17hrs would do.

I got the Cowon S9 to replace my Archos 605 4GB. The 4GB is a lot lighter and thinner than the 80GB. The Cowon S9 is about 3 times smaller and lighter than the 4GB.
To put it into perspective I have been using the Archos 605 for watching videos on the train. I cannot put it in my pocket so it is cumbersome to take it out of the bag, out of the case and start playing videos. It does not cut it as a MP3 player, because it is just too big. The picture quality on the Archos is also much more washed out, colors just do no pop and no matter if it has 800x480 resolution, the same videos look much better on the Cowon S9. The Cowon S9 on the other hand looks stylish, boots up fast and it's just the right size. You can easily take it out of your pocket to start watching videos right away, and when you want to listen to music in a hurry, you just simply switch to the music player and it can go right back into your pocket so the convenience factor plays a much bigger role. |
