Default XP won't install Express as a device.

My Express was installed on my desktop, but XP can't find the software on my Notebook. Tried all kinds of recommended button-press combos, nothing seemed to work but it was at least working. Removed it from the Notebook and it froze up on updating database, several minutes.

Took it to the desktop to attempt update the firmware, and that froze up during installation. In fact, froze the whole computer up and I had to reset. I guess that wasn't such a good idea, because now it won't do anything. It won't power up, but it will display the low battery message at least.

Tried changing it up off the USB, still nothing except the battery message itself.

I have an older Sansa M230, and it's working ok, and is recognized.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have Windows XP SP2 or SP3 with Windows Media Player 10 or 11 installed? The Express is MTP by default, and if you have a corrupted or no MTP driver for it, it will not work. All the updates will work the best tho. If you do the MSC mode trick, it should work tho.

BTW, if I press the down volume button while plugging it in to the USB port, Windows will 'attempt' the install the Express as a STMP3600, but it still can't find the software.

SP3, and I never use WMP, I use foobar2000. But I looked and WMP Ver10 is installed.

MSC mode trick, is that holding down the down volume button?

That is recovery mode when I tested it. You might want to try WMP11 or do MSC mode with WMP10. Here is the post: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=12426

wpd10.inf not found. That's as far as I went.

Under Add New Hardware Wizard, nothing is found automatically, but I can add an MTP device. After installing that, I get a message stating "The software for this device is installed, but may not work correctly. This Device cannot start. Code 10."

Have you tried manually installing USB Mass Storage Driver?

Well, I have two external USB hard drives, and my other Sansa is recognized, as well as the card reader from my printer....

USB Mass Storage Device appears three times in Device Manager, if that makes a difference.

You can right click on on the Express in the Device Manager, then "Update Driver," manually select the other driver and not the MTP driver.

Its only shown as an MTP device. Windows doesn't find a better driver, but I was able to find another one, also for an MTP device. I installed it though Windows recommended I shouldn't, and Device Manager still shows an error.

I think that interrupting the Firmware update fried it. Prior to that it would power up on its own, but now, Nada.

Do not use the best driver. You can use the other driver that Windows will let you put if you manually install the driver.

A manual installation is looking for an INF file, which makes sense, except that I don't have one and none are shown at the Sansa site. After being plugged in to the USB port overnight, the only display I can get is "Low Battery" which shouldn't be, as it was working properly prior to the partial firmware update.

Got it working.

http://www.mediafire.com/?ymzc0gz9kmn

The above is a link to Sansa Express Rescue Kit.zip (3.66 MB) which includes the INF drivers along with a version of the updater that [apparently] includes the firmware [v1.01.05]

Here is the "How I Debricked my Sansa Express" thread at the Sansa site.
http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/boar...cending&page=4

It is now showing up on my desktop as a "Sansa Express." I copied over some personal MP3 that I have ripped, unplugged, played fine. Replugged, Sansa Updater started, firmware updated to current [v1.01.12a].

Whew, I figured this unit was a goner. That MediaFire link above should be pinned.
