Default Ideal album art size for p2

Good day,

My P2 is on its way from Canada and I started cleaning up my audio library. I am almost half way through, and it occurs that I have been resizing album art to about 192x192, but I doubt this is ideal for display on the p2.

Can anyone suggest what is the ideal size for album art to display on the P2? Also, any other tips for album art display (I embed art within the files). Thanks.

Thanks a million. I was thinking more along the lines of 480x272, but i think thats for video. 300 x 300 makes sense since most album art is square to begin with.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but anything larger than 272 pixels squared won't turn up. At least it didn't the last time I tried.

The screen is 480 x 272. A square 272 x 272 would be perfect for full screen art.

Great, Zero! Print them out on sticky back paper (I hope it doesn't get stuck in your printer) and paste them onto real old fashioned LP albums. Then take a photo of them with an 8megapixel camera or better. Load the pictures from the camera onto your PC and use a photo editor to print them again, only at higher resolution. Paste those to your walls, perhaps as new wallpaper. Might make a great media room decor. Shoot video of a slow pan around this room. Copy that video to your PC, then use a video editor to cut individual frames of each cover and save them as JPGs. Those should be about 240 x 240, which with a little resizing by a photo editor should be perfect for the P2.

... okay, I think someone overdosed on sarcasm.
The ideal size used to be 200x200, but the latest firmwares made the art size larger, correct?

Correct. The serious answer I previously gave was 272x272. Why? The screen width is 272 pixels.

It doesn't matter. It will scale them on anything but the double-tap full screen mode (tap the screen twice to pull up full screen album art). 300x300 looks great and is the most common size you'll find on Amazon or CDDB search. So it works great. Smaller than 200x200 though, and you'll start noticing a lot of artifacting from the rescaling the P2 has to do.

Long story short, anything above about 250x250 is pretty much ideal. It can be basically as big as you want (I'm sure there is a maximum limit somewhere) but it's more taxing for your P2 to scale when you're doing album art view and scrolling.

So, bigger is better then (I am gonna stick with 300x300), once you maintain the initial aspect ratio? Size is limited however, since I believe wma 10 has a limit of 60kb for embedded album art.

Not sure what the limit is for mp3, but it might be similar?

I wouldn't say bigger is better for the image dimensions; as said above the ideal size for the P2 is 272x272. Smaller will require the art get stretched and larger will use the player's software to shrink it (which isn't too great looking).
However a bigger file size should be better, a 300x300 image at 60kb should have much better image quality than a 300x300 image at just 6kb.

Exactly. I make all of my own album art (on CD's I own) from high quality scans that I saved as optimized jpegs in photoshop. I understand that makes me a little obsessive, but then again, you only do it once.

For the record, my album art is saved as 300x300 because it's the size that looks best in the media player and on the two mp3's supporting album art I have.

If you want good scaling from larger images, your best bet will be a multiple of 272.

That leaves 544 square, 816 square, 1088 square and so on.

Have you compared it with something at 272x272? Just wondering if there's a noticeable difference.
Though I am tempted to just work off a multiple of 272 (or 200 or whatever) so that the album art looks decent in WMP/MM/etc.

It depends. Straight lines suffer the most when scaled. For example, the Dark Side album art I have is 300x300 and the straight beam of light is stairstepped towards the prism because of the scaling. Most of the time, the difference between something 272x272 and something 300x300 is entirely not noticable. More important than size, is the optimization of the jpeg. A low quality jpeg save at 272x272 will look worse than a good high quality save at 150x150... So take all this size crap with a grain of salt.

i just got my P2, and i'm lovin' everything about it, but cuz i'm a D2 user also, the album art on the P2 bugs me.

the D2 is just so damn good at resizing album art. i have all my album art optimized for the D2's full screen flash skins, so they're all 240x240.

after looking at them on the P2 though, i'm very disappointed.

i'm currently using BW3 (larger album art), and i'm a bit confused. I looked at my 240x240 album in the picture viewer on the P2, and compared it to the now playing screen's. They seem almost identical in size (to my eye) but the now playing screen's album is weird and distorted.

i'm gonna update all my album art to 272x272 for the P2's double tap screen, but i'm still curious...

why does the P2's now playing screen's album art suck so much?
