Badger, what about 1.03.01g that is part of the new beta? Do you need a copy of mi4 and or rom?

The G and H mi4 files are both decrypted with the same key, as part of the latest mi4code.

I have signed an old firmware with the new key and still a no-go. It looks like 1.03 really makes the player non-upgradable.

There is a utility which can read/write directly to the device in manufacturer mode (and possibly de-brick any player as well). So it might be able to help with the downgrade as well. I am not sure if the author is willing for it to be distributed publically however.

Does Rockbox start on the unit after you upgraded to 1.03?

I haven't tried to install Rockbox based on warnings from the Rockbox crew and since I cannot help its development. But I am willing to try if you want to PM me the info.

If you just install the Rockbox bootloader (which isn't to be confused with the sansa's own bootloader) you should see a logo and some text on the display before it fails to load Rockbox (if you don'y install that as well).

It would work as a proof that our "exploit" is still working to start custom code.

Either way, you can then use the recovery mode to put back the original firmware mi4 file.

Get the Rockbox bootloader mi4 file here:

It didnt work. The player will not recognize that a new bootloader is available. I did this in MSC in the root, system folder and in recovery mode. Oh well....

Try the following with the old rom/new firmware/old firmware signed with new key:
go to recovery mode
put the rom as "pribootLoader.rom"
and put the firmware as "firmware.mi4"
make sure the L is uppercase in the rom file name. Try this with both modes as well, as I cannot tell from hex viewing which one it is for (probably both)

Eh, does the 1.03 call the mi4 firmware.mi4 when you put it on the player? If so, did you name the Rockbox bootloader like that as well when you tried it?

THANK YOU ZIVAN!!!! Yes, renaming the firmware and rom allowed me to downgrade as well as test the rockbox bootloader you posted for me. Thanks guys for all the effort! I will put a thread in the firmware section to help others.

Good to hear it works. I sort of stumbled on this a week back, but forgot the exact names.
This should work on the c200 as well I believe.

Do you have to copy the bootloader, or can you just upgrade firmware.mi4?

If you are downgrading, then you need the bootloader.

Guys. I don't claim to be an elite haxor, but I put on 1.03 Beta and fought my player all night long last night. It just went crazy, all kinds of different problems completely random.

As far as I can determine, the Hold key completely eliminates the abillity to boot into a Recovery mode now. And I can't find any way to downgrade. Dropping files into the Sansa root has no effect that I can determine.

I would seriously avoid upgrading to 1.03 until more results are in. I had a nightmare night, and it really pissed me off. I finally got the player the way I want, but it took till 4:00 am, and just rebooting dozens and dozens of time. Randomly, it would connect when I wanted it to, or boot to Rockbox. I could find no pattern whatsoever.

Here is the solution for downgrading the 1.03 "Hebrew" beta firmware, if you cannot get your player to boot in Recovery mode.

1. You CAN copy the .18 or .24 firmware into the root directory and it will revert to the old firmware.
2. The reason it won't work if you just copy them is 1.03 will not recognize the old file names. You simply need to rename the .18 or .24 version firmware files to names that the 1.03 beta firmware will recognize.
3. Rename the files Firmware.mi4 and pribootLoader.rom
4. Now you can copy them to the root of the Sansa (if you can't get Recovery mode to start) and reboot and you will be downgraded to the old firmware.
