Smile Samsung yp-t9 or ipod nano2?

Both players look nice on the outside (meaning they won't scratch up that easily) and could have firmware updates in the future quicker than most. The t9 looks amazing and looks like it has more hard button use than the z5's touch pad(plz correct me on this if wrong) which decided to crap out on me for good the other day.The nano2 has the click wheel but I haven't heard any problems with that on apple or ipod forums regarding the new one(yet). I'm not really sure if the T9 is available yet although I have heard that it has been released to the USA.

price wise I heard they are both $150 and tax for the 2GB and $200+ for 4GB+

I'm not really sure what to get. I don't want to waste my money buying a player that's only going to work for less than a year.

I've used Z5, new iPod Nano, and T9. I kept T9. Z5's audio quality was already better than Nano's, and T9 adds user EQ, Flash menu, and better design to Z5. To me, the new Nano design, which resembles Mini, too clean and girly. I got bored of it within a week. Both 2Gb and 4Gb are already available.

I maybe biased, but I just bought a t9 after trying out the zen vision:m, and iriver clix, and fooling around with a friend's nano. I freaking love this thing.

Here's the comment I put up a few minutes ago.

"Blootooth aside, which I didn't care from the beginning, this is a phenomonel player. I love the tactile feedback i get from the d-pad, and the ui is really fun to use, although I think it's slightly slower that I would like it. Then again, it runs on flash and there are lots of animations going on so that makes up for it. There are bleep sounds every time you slect an item and this is not the monotone clicks you get from an ipod or a creative zen since it's actually pleasant to hear.

The size and weight. I've heard people say how much thicker this is compared to the ipod nano... Ok, I wish people stop comparing every flash player to that overly anorexic ipod. This thing is LIGHT and SMALL. You won't even know it's in you pocket, even tight jeans.

If you buy it from best buy, it comes with like 2 months of subsciption music. Excuse me, but tell me that once you come out with an Asian music service.

The games are crap, and I already expected that after playing around with a iriver clix.

Pictures look very nice and the colors are bright. Video also looks nice, or at least the demo one that came with the player. Since it only uses svi format, I'm probably gonna be too lazy to convert stuff.

What I didn't like was how easily it catches fingerprints. I mean holy crap, it catches it REALLY good. This might be due to the scratch proof surface, but I don't know.

Some random fact. I love the way the backlight turns on if you press a button while in hold mode. I know some people might think this sucks, but when I'm listening to music on hold and want to know what song I'm listening to, taking out of hold mode is a big pain. This was the case for me with the clix and the vision: m.

I think Samsung really hit it off with the k5 and the t9, and I woulda gotten the k5 if it was alittle cheaper. The guy next to me at best buy was looking at the k5 and said one word, "pimp," and I whole-heartedly agreed."

hehe, I said blootooth.

Anyways, once they changed the nano into a longer mini, I ran away. I never liked the mini design, but I know some do because I've been seeing people with them a lot.

The ipod i great. The interface is reallt intuitive too. But when you use the t9 for a while, you can't go back since the ui is so interactive, the sound quality is great, it plays video, and I won't even mention games. Ah, the stock earphones are actually pretty nice.

I always say, get the most you can get out of your green.

I posted this comment on everythingusb.com recently. Here it is for your perusal.

I have the YP-T9J ABY, bought it today at Bestbuy in Bellingham WA. It has v1.20-US firmware which does not contain Bluetooth. The non-US units use v1.15 and have bluetooth as item 9 in the menu. I dont know if this unit contains the bluetooth hardware or not. Perhaps it does but is simply disabled in firmware for the US market. I tried downgrading to v1.15 but my attempt was ignored.

This is a beautiful little unit compared to the YP-Z5. It has a graphic equilizer and FM radio. Using Samsung Media Studio 5 you can convert your MPGs and store them as movies on the T9 and they look great, and the sound is synchronized. The audio quality is every bit as good as the Z5. There is one glaring deficiency that will require a firmware update:

THE USB TRANSFER IS FREAKING SLOW! Whereas the Z5 is zippy quick.. 2-3 seconds per song, the T9 pauses for 10-15 at the beginning of the transfer, and another 10-15 seconds just before completing the transfer, and hiccups a few times along the way. Btw I am using Napster to Go to load the T9, just as I did with the Z5.

If they fix the USB transfer issue, I'd give this player a 9/10.

As for the topic "Samsung yp-t9 or ipod nano2?" Great hardware, but Apple can take their iTunes and go screw themselves, in my opinion.

If you hold the record button down while turning on the unit, you get a special screen:

LOW LEVEL FORMAT
USB MODE

Put Keycodes or
Reset(REC+MENU)!!

K9L8G08 46 v1.02

I wonder what the keycodes are. You can press 7 times on the front panel and then it reboots itself. I couldn't get it to do anything noticible.
.
Edit: the above screen is generated by the bootloader as it doesnt appear anywhere in the firmware.

For anyone who cares:
The firmware appears to be written in C for Linux, using VXWorks 5.5.1. Version 1.15 was built on Sept 23 at 17:41:01 by someone named Jin Mook. It's 7020448 bytes long. The release is marked v1.11_us_view.. but I bet the developer just forgot to update the internal rev to 1.15.
