In some parts of the US, gasoline is over $4 a gallon now. Oil hit $135 a barrel yesterday, but is down a bit today.

Yesterday I paid £1.25 per litre. We have 4.54 litre to a UK gallon which is £5.76 per gallon

(remember that that pound in my pocket was already taxed at 40% when I earned it, even my son who is a low wage earner is taxed at 20%. Of each pound that I earn, I draw after tax and insurance about 60p)

The curent exchange rate is 1GBP = 1.97 USD

so we pay $11.30 USD per UK gallon

And Her majesties thieving bastages get rich, naw only joking, they plough it into healthcare and education for asylum seakers, illegal immigrants, recently arrives eastern eauropeans and teenage mothers with IQs measured on the same scale as amoeba.

Yesterday I had to buy new spectacles. Now I need complex lenses to correct eye damage from birth, I am not your regular long or short sighted joe (look at my avatar fgs that is me). I dont go to some fancy private place, I go to the local university and get examined by students and then dispenced by students to get a big discount. I order from the cheaper non designer range of frames and even then for a pair of distance/ driving glasses and a pair of reading glasses I paid over £500, that is over $1000 USD for just two pairs of specs that I need to keep me legal on the road !!

Does anyone know what life would be like in New Zealand?

1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters
At $1.98 per Brittish pound, 1.25 Quid per liter equals $9.37 per US gallon. That is crazy! Around 80% of adults in the US own a car. I wonder what the percentages are for the UK and for other European countries. I also wonder why most of the EU has switched to the Euro, but the UK still uses the pound.

UGH! I hope not, as many people will be suffering greatly if that happens. Food price would rise dramatically from their already very high levels if that happens. Many people need to travel long distances to get to work, and don't have the option of public transportation or carpooling. I would like to see great government incentives for people to buy fuel efficient cars. I would like to see the most efficient cars being exempt from sales tax, and also eligible to significant enough income tax credits for those who buy these.

The US needs to expand oil exploration in Alaska. Something like 60% of the oil consumed in the US is imported. Environmental groups seem to have had great power in limiting oil exploration in Alaska, however we are all suffering because of this. Imo much greater oil exploration in Alaska could probably be done with very minimal impact on the environment.

Don't even think about that! Negative thoughts like that won't help us .

Besides, I think it's gonna happen alot sooner than Christmas.

Change is good, particularly where it concerns our energy consumption; and I welcome any change that removes our dependence on non-renewable energy sources over which a small but extremely powerful group of people have control. However, something like you suggest would completely destroy the economy, force millions of people out of work, and place even basic necessities out of our reach. That would simply be too much too quickly.

Some people in Europe are paying over $9 a gallon now. Oil is down this morning to under $127 a barrel. It hit a high of around $135 a barrel less than one week ago. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for retail gasoline prices to start dropping if oil prices keep declining. At least you should be thankful that your are in NYC which has a great mass transit system. For many people in the US, mass transit or carpooling is not an option.

Maybe not that high, but oil price at the fuel pump is still not high enough.

Oil price dramatically increased since about the last two years, but for the same period, the purchase of fuel wasting vehicles (SUV, sport cars, etc...) also slightly increased. Gas-guzzlers sales should have decreased, logically, but no, people are too stupid!!!
