Cool connecting via headphone jack

I am a zen vision m owner and am shopping for speakers. Since there are only two or three options for a docking system, I am looking at buying speakers that connect via headphone jack. But I don't understand if it will charge the player and complete all the functions it would if it were connected through the dock. Will a headphone jack just play the sound and not recharge the player?
