Default what's up with 0 byte .pla files??

I always like to generate my playlists with tools (python scripts) I write myself but I'm slowly switching to the ones in the posts because I like the GUI's. I stay away from MS WMP or even WinAmp, I don't want to subscribe to any services either. When I google pla format files they seem like simple path files like m3u's but on the clip they display as zero bytes, even when I edit in binary mode. Going to the properties and working with the playlist is ok but I just wanted to know the mechanics - anyone know? Is the playlist name a pointer into the device? Can I get at it?

When I make m3u playlists it's kind of irritating (but I can live with) the fact that relative paths don't work. It seems to be the biggest problem with playlist creation that people post here.
