Smile MicroSD Cards are fairly cheap

Can't plug in a CD RW into a portable device, but you can plug in memory
cards into some MP3 players, and it's VERY convenient.

I'm not sure you CAN download to the SD card, they don't have the
music restrictions, but you CAN get MP3s from your own CDs and
copy them to an SD card and just plug in. I have a few 2-GB cards,
paid about $10 each for them (Buy.com) and they work great.

If you lose the cards, don't use them. But they are great if you don't
tend to lose them.
