Default Drag & Drop in MTP

Ok I just got my P2 yesterday and I'm very happy with it.
Just a couple of questions though. I've been reading a lot of threads here and everyone seems to imply that one can't drag and drop files directly onto the p2 in MTP mode. (what does MTP and UMS stand for by the way?)

I tried though and I was able to put songs, pictures, text, and videos into the player no problem.

Question is, what's going on and am I going to break something if I keep doing this?
My sister's P2 lets her do the same thing by the way.
We both got it at Fry's.

Thanks!

Windows XP Pro SP2
YP-P2 updated to 3.15 firmware

It's true, you can drag and drop. The functionality of drag and drop on MTP depends based on your WMP version. On some versions, you can't drag and drop files except for a few accepted file types.

Of course you can, it's just, MTP means it is seen as an audio device, therefore non-media applications will not see the device, UMS makes it act like a thumb drive, therefore it is accessible by anything supporting it.

So I won't break anything, right?

Thanks for the replies.

You shouldn't. MTP is just fine, I just prefer UMS. They have usually similar properties depending on how you use your P2.

ok last few questions promise:

1. so the "correct" way for transferring files to the p2 in MTP though is through syncing with a media player, yeah?

2. i usually keep my music in different folders in my computer, can i drag and drop the whole folder instead of just the files to the p2? (is there "folder support" in the p2 or will that cause problems?) - or when i sync, will wmp11 (or the p2) automatically separate them into albums w/o the need for folders?

3. i know you have to embed thumnails or use sms to get thumbnails on pictures, does anyone know if paint.net will do this, i don't get along well with either sms or gimp. (and no photoshop either) =P

thanks again!

You can drag and drop anything you want. If Windows doesn't think it's a supported file, it will tell you, but you can still click to add it anyway. That means you can drop anything you want on it. Folders or individual files. The P2 dynamically builds a library everytime you unplug it from your PC, so it will update the song list if you transfer a whole folder or just a few songs. If the tags in the files are correct then it will sort them and arrange them exactly how they should be. If they're not, then you're likely to have issues. (You can use mp3tag to fix tag issues in song files, btw)

paint.net will do it, you can select it in save options.

MTP is the Media Transfer Protocol developed by Microsoft.

UMS is the commonly used abbreviation for USB Mass Storage.

Enjoy!

You might be confused with Paint and Paint.net. I'm not really sure what this application has to do with music though.

However if you want Paint.net you will need to have .net first (a foundation for .net applications). In XP you need to download and install .net; in Vista .net is preinstalled.
