Archos players do not support soft-subs, if that's your question. For .srt, .smi, and .sub support, check the Cowon A3.

as long as it supports avi or maybe even h.264 and the screens big that's fine

it supports avi in DivX and Xvid, H.264 is optional
and unless the subtitles are on the video itself it will only work if they are DVD subtitles on .vob
