Just a technical curiosity here...
IF you use MSC mode (or don't mind switching over to it for a second), please look in your Clip's root directory; you will see a file named "version.sdk". You can open this file in any text editor, such as Notepad, or Word. Don't worry, you can't hurt anything. It should read something like this: Code:
#DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE Product: Express FW: V01.01.20A Region: Americas 1.) Does anyone's say something other than "Express"? Like "Clip"?? 2.) Does your Region say other than "Americas" and if so, what's the FW version reported? BTW don't bother trying to edit it, as the Clip will just overwrite it when it... notices. Thanks in advance... |

Mine also reads:
#DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE Product: Express FW: V01.01.20A Region: Americas I wonder if this FW would actually run on my "Express." It would be a big improvement. |

Same here (bought in France, with radio).

Well, seems to depend what firmware suffix you use. I dropped a m300p.bin and m300e.bin on it, and got this:
Code:
#DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE Product: Express FW: V01.01.20P Region: Americas Code:
#DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE Product: Express FW: V01.01.20E Region: Americas

My thoughts exactly. It is a fact that all regions use the same FW file (except for that letter code thang) and that the text we are reading can be written out by the FW, if the file is missing.
The static text is hardcoded in the FW and appears to be the same for all regions, so if the file originally said "Europe" or anything else, it would be re-written as "Americas" if deleted...I'm 100% sure that a firmware update rewrites this file also because the dynamic text changes (the FW version and letter code). Still need some more samples, hopefully someone will post their findings on a virgin Clip (before any FW upgrades) from another region... |

My "French" Clip had 1.01.11F as original firmware version, and it was "Region: Americas" anyway.

Same thing on mine, agreed that all regions use the same FW file, except for their country code.
Code:
#DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE Product: Express FW: V01.01.20A Region: Americas Edit: FYI, I just checked the e200v1 and here's it: Code:
#DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE Product: e260 FW: 01.02.18A Region: America Build Date: 2006.11.03 Serial: 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000....

So it looks like the Clip's firmware may have been based on the Express', and Sandisk just never bothered to change the string?
