In short, does the UMS function work on Windows 98?

Thanks in advance,

UMS has worked on XP without Window Media Player installed, but XP supports UMS natively. UMS will only work on 98 if there are UMS drivers installed. In short it _may_ work but you will probably run into all kinds of problems.

In samsung official site you can find driver to use your Z5 with win2000, WinMe, Win98 and so on...

With Win2000 it works very well, with other SO I've not tried, but should work too

UMS works fine if your USB ports work. That's the only thing you'd need a driver for, and I HIGHLY recommend using USB2 ports if you've got 'em.

The samsung drivers http://www.samsung.com/sg/support/pr...e=DR&language=

The samsung manual recommends a higher spec machine, but I am assuming that is for the syncing to work and the supplied media player, try the drivers and connect see what happens with the player set to UMS mode or holding the back arrow while connecting the player.

To find out which USB ports you have you need to go into the device manager can be found in "control panel" then "system" then select "hardware" tab and "device manager", where it lists USB expand the '+' and if they are USB 2 it will say enhanced hub or close too. I don't know if USB 2 is supported by Win98 for onboard USB ports may have to go to the MB site for driver updates.

I *think* that UMS drivers are generic: i.e. that you can use one device's drivers for all of them. That makes sense because, duh, all UMS compatible devices speak the same "language".
Regarding to the USB ports on your computer, judging by its age, they're probably USB 1 (i.e : the slow model ). Don't worry they work well, you'll just have to wait longer for the music to copy

Default Is the z5 Windows 98 compatible?

Has anyone actually transfered files to the z5 with Windows 98? It would be good to have confirmation from someone on this board that has worked it out, because there are many contradictions around the web. If so, please explain how you did it; it would be very helpful if you specify the driver that you installed.

Also, please specify the model of your player. The driver that infestation mentionned above is for the z5F. This model is compatible with windows 98, as mentioned on Samsung's website (http://www.samsung.com/sg/products/a...pecifications). However, the z5 is not compatible with Windows 98--at least officially on Samsung's website. The system requirements are Windows XP and WMP 10.

I have the yp-z5qb/xac.

Psionic - i have Window 2000 pro and the YP-Z5. Do i just need to d/l the drivers for win 2k to have it work? WMP10 says it only works with XP. How did you get it to successfully work for you? How can you install WMP10 on Win 2k? Can i transfer mp3's using another media player? i.e. wmp9? Hope you can help me out on how I can successfully transfer mp3's from PC media player to YP.

any help greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Nick

I think you need at least Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) for UMS - and USB in general - to work well.

Haven't been running Win98 for ages, but IIRC the first release had severe problems with USB.
