shows background picture/no windows menu/nothing

i had it hooked up to my stereo, listening to music, when i pressed the 'skip' button to go to the next song there was a quick electronic noise then it went quiet and showed the opening background picture (the grassy hill and blue sky). it has since been stuck on that. when turned off then back on it's the same thing. i plugged it into the usb on my laptop and it wouldn't even acknowledge that something was plugged in, even through wmp snyc page.
i've never had any problems with it and have never done anything unusual to it. i hope someone has some idea, thanks
