freezes up before accessing song list

When I click the music menu the player works fine until I click another menu(ie. artist, album artist) then it freezes up and reads "searching... 0 found ()". After a couple seconds the blue wheel dims and screen goes dark but everything lights back up if the turn the scroll wheel but it never gets past this screen and I have to hold the power button for the 15 second shutdown to take over. Any suggestions?
