But different bootloader, which can't read the firmware. Based on your thinking, I can dual boot Windows and Linux and have Windows run my Linux programs, because it's the same computer and same hardware.

Placing it on the Sansa is loading. Disconnecting the Sansa and having it restart is installing. Seeing that you let it restart, you installed the firmware.
