Default Problem with Installation

I'm trying to put Rockbox on my 200r for the first time. I went to the site for the instructions for the windows installation. I put it in manufacturer mode, but Windows didn't ask for the driver, which I thought was odd. Then I ran the R patcher, but I don't think the patcher was able to recognize the USB cord. I tried it again with mys sister's R, but it still didn't work. When I use manufacturer mode, Windows is calling the USB cable "new hardware", but when it's in the normal firmware it's fine. Help?

Are you sure the Hold switch is on and you holding the Select button? Is it the wheel only turned on and the screen turned off?

Yes, the wheels on and everythings else is off and it's on hold. But just so we're sure, the select button is the button inside the wheel, right?

Yes.

I haven't tried the Windows installation, though I believe that even if Windows does not ask for them, the drivers need to be installed. I believe that can be done by right clicking the inf file, and selecting "Install" though I can't say for sure.

I clicked install for the inf file, and it still does the "No USB busses found" thing on the patcher.

Well...

1. It says to put it in Manufacturer.

2. I've already tried it in normal mode, and it still says it, and I'm quoting the patcher word for word, "Could not find any USB busses."

I believe you - I'm looking at the code source, and that is a valid error message . It's triggered by "usb_find_busses" being less than 0, though I don't see why that'd be. However, it seems like it's more related to a problem with the computer, and not the Sansa, which could explain the "but Windows didn't ask for the driver, which I thought was odd". Have you tested the USB port(s) to make sure they work? Otherwise, I'd say you may need to try it on another computer.

EDIT: I take those last two sentences back. usb_find_busses is a function from libusb - are you sure libusb is installed and working properly?

Since I've never heard of libusb and can't find it on my computer, I'm assuming I haven't installed it. I downloaded the files, but I have no idea how to install them.

Since it is an exe file, you install it like a normal program.

Mine is not and .exe, it's a folder filled with random files. Do you have a link to the .exe download?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found one. Now that it's installed, I ran the patcher but now a new error is coming up. It says that it searches for the device, but then it says that the device isn't found and asks me to make sure it's in manufacturer mode.

Question: I have an e250r, but it says that this is an e200rpatcher. Should I be using another patcher?

If you have an e200R, e200rpatcher is what you need. Are you logged in as an administrator? I haven't tried manufacturing mode on Windows, so I can't say for sure what the problem could be.

Is the original bootloading absolutely necessary? It seems like sort of a hassle (or, it has been for me).

DCM, you do not need the original bootloader. You need the modified e200r and Rockbox bootloaders on the Sansa e200R.

I still don't understand why the R boot loader doesn't recognize my R. It's plugged in manufacturer mode. I think the problem is with the driver. Windows still hasn't asked for it and when I installed it manually by right clicking the inf file, nothing really happened.

The fricking Rockbox support forums are down. That's just perfect.

The forum server was donated to Rockbox, but very few people have access to it (IIUC) which means if it goes down, it could be down for a while. It's up for me though, but maybe I'm just lucky.

The R bootloader recognizes your e200R - Windows however, does not seem to like it. An easier solution might be to try installing it via a Linux distro - quite a few people seem to use Ubuntu (http://ubuntu.com) - which should go a lot more smoothly.

All right, I give up on Windows. I'll just try the live cd method. Expect more gripes and moans from me.
