But this is a step in the right direction to making it work, right?

Correction: I wasn't able to run Rockbox with the modified R bootloader, which disables the signature check. What I just finished writing a howto on was how to get the e200 (non-R) bootloader on to the e200R.

But you might be able to use the latter part of the process to convert an e200R to a vanilla e200 using this process.

So the R can be reverted to the e200 again by taking original firmware?

Oh and does anyone have a compiled version of the e200tool for linux? I can't compile it.

If compiling it is beyond you - then I'm certainly not keen to provide you with it.

It's a tool which is extremely complex, and is easy to break your sansa with. Think of compiling it as a right of passage. If you have the smarts to manage that - then you have the smarts to use it.

Update:

Rockbox was just booted on an e200 converted to an e200R.

http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...saE200R#Plan_B

Rockbox is now working on e200R.

Code:
    * Boot the e200r into manufacturing mode
    * Use 'e200tool recover' to boot it into plain/vanilla e200 BL recovery mode (get the BL.rom image from http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/mi4.html)
    * Upload the patched e200r BL (renamed properly to BL_SD_boardSupportSD.rom)
    * Disconnect

Yes, and we all got to celebrate on IRC While the process is somewhat complicated for a beginner, it can be done. I've created a bash script to automate the more difficult parts, so all the user needs to do is put the Sansa in manufacturing mode, and copy a few files on to the Sansa, as the script says. Linux is required to get Rockbox on to the e200R, so don't even bother unless you can boot into Linux (LiveCDs are OK)

To use: (done on Ubuntu, but would probably work on any other distro)
Open up the Terminal. On Ubuntu, go to Applications, Accessories, and Terminal.
Type: "wget http://chrisjs.com/wp-content/upload...09/rockbox.sh; chmod +x rockbox.sh; sudo bash rockbox.sh"
Follow the directions, and it should work. I haven't tested that script enough yet, and it isn't very stable, but it should work.

(all it does is mostly automate the steps from Plan B)

Thank you Chrisjs, it worked like a charm! The Sansa community owes a lot to you devs out there.

To Godeater - I'm sorry. I wasn't aware I'd offend you by asking. Good thing Not all devs are not as...well I won't go any further (you get the message).

I wasn't offended - but I don't know you, and I have no idea of your technical ability. I didn't want to hand you something which might end up breaking your player if you used it incorrectly. Sorry if you thought I was being rude - I was just trying to avoid an expensive mistake.

No hard feelings; I understand. I wouldn't have blamed you for anything bad actions to my Sansa. In this day of age, you gotta protect yourself *lawsuits*.

Well at least Rockbox is now functional on the R series thanks to you devs out there!

That's odd... I did this exact same thing, but it didn't work... I'll try it again later.

So now, where I can make my normal e200 to an R model with RB running, what features offers the R firmware in particular?

Chrisjs or anyone else, I want to turn my e200 into an R without Rockbox. Can someone provide the steps for this process? I also want to be able to revert back. TIA.

You should be able to place both the Rhapsody bootloader and firmware onto your e200 to turn it into an R. For turning it back into the e200, use the same process as is used for fixing the blue ring of death (see FAQ

I did the swap, but unfortunately it seems that the Rhapsody software knows something is not right. It transfers the songs and channels, but when the player restarts it doesn't show anything on it. And in the lower right corner of the Rhapsody software it says: Device Authorized: Device Certificate Corrupted. I will mess with it more tomorrow.

I can confirm that. I think it may be some sort of hardware thing, as I formatted the Sansa, and still didn't have any luck. I don't know the ins and outs of DRM (don't need to) but there's a chance we won't be able to fix it.

I can confirm that the Rhapsody firmware works fine in Playsforsure mode. This is good for people like me who use a subscription service, but want the prettier fonts and additional options that the Rhapsody firmware has to offer. I have a ticket called into Rhaposdy to see if they can work any magic to fix the corrputed certificate on my *wink* "e260R".

I was able to migrate my e280 to the "R" version using the steps provided in this thread. However, I also have the "Device Authorized: Device Certificate Corrupted" issue w/Rhapsody and have tried formatting, re-formattimg, authorizing, re-authorizing, to no avail. I cannot sync w/Rhapsody (to Go) anymore. Given this info:

1) Can I go back to the non-R version? I have tried loading a previous non-R firmware in recovery mode, doesn't work, but I can still reload R version.

2) What is the fix for "Device Authorized: Device Certificate Corrupted"?? Nothing on the Real forums has worked for me.
