Default PC Speakers, MP3 Compatible?

I was thinking of purchasing a 3.5mm Stereo extension(Line in) Cable and connecting my Mp3 to spare computer speakers I have.
To me this makes sense but here's where I'm not sure.

If I connect PC Speakers to a wall outlet and then an MP3 to the Speakers via the(Earphone Jack).
Would it work?

I just want to make sure before I invest in the cable and (12v./1Amp) Plug I'm missing for the speakers.

Thanks in Advance for any help you can offer.

yes it would work, the wall socket is there to provide power for the amp inside the speakers. The mp3 cant do that

Without connecting the speakers to any PC... it'll still work right?
Just want to be sure... It makes complete sense to me but for some reason at Radioshack they said that it wouldn't work.
