Default Home theater speakers

Our family just got a 42" plasma but the speakers on it are awful! We put in my computer speakers and its much better. I computer is now hooked up to my dolby pro-logic fake surround sound system which fine with me. But we still need a good REAL surround sound system and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on what we should get. I was also wandering what the difference between 5.1 and surround sound if there even is a difference. thanks!

bose is out of the question-- way too expensive! I don't think they could be THAT great. Oh and they kind of have to be not very expensive....

Ok here is the 411

Stereo is left and right= 2 channel or 2.0

if you add in a centre channel then you get 3.0

if you add in a rear channel then you get 4.0

if you add in a stereo rear channel then you get 5.0

if you add in a high level centre rear channel then you get 6.0

The point 1 (.1) refers to the sub woofer which carries the deep bass sounds.

Now there are several different ways of encoding and decoding the extra channels such as Dolby, Pro Logic, Digital, Thx etc.

My advice would be to get an AV amp such as the Cambridge Audio Azure 540R which has all the decoders built inside and can drive up to 6.1 channels at 80 watt rms per channel.

Get a decent set of speakers to hook to this such as Gale, Mordaunt Short, Eltax, Mission, Wharfedale, Tannoy etc.

If you are in the UK , I would direct you to Mr Richer

Actually visit this site anyway as you can learn all the answers you need here, it is easy access

You actually have to look at the forum headings to see it.

No you know, and knowing is half the battle.

The onix x-ls series are great value speakers. However, I think they are out of your price range, in that case the Insignia NSB-2111 is getting quite a bit of praise in audiophile forums.

Hmm.. I really don't know much about speakers in the $300 price range.

But the cheapest Klipsch, Polk or Infinity sets should outperform 10 times as pricey Bose crap by far.

Buy a good system once, you don't have to upgrade for 15-20 years. I have speakers from all three of these companies, and they deliver excellent value for the price.

I highly recommend the Onkyo HTiB systems. (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo...oductDetail.do)

I bought the next model up from that, and I'm pretty impressed. By no means the best out there, but it'll definitly impress you.
