Default at what point does one need an amp?

Remember that scene in the princess bride when Inigo tells Westley unless the enemy has a study hes a gripper.....well I don't have a study lol. Therefore the topic. Is it at a certain spec. You know you need one or something else?

I would venture to say 80% (or more) of those people who have one don't really need it.

Myself included.

I've never needed one, would rather carry a 2nd player for more capacity if I'm going to carry a 2nd device.

Very low impedance with a crappy MP3 player. Less common now though given that quality players are widely available.

Headphones with a sensitivity less than ~75-80 dB/V.

You have an Mp3 player with a volume cap that cannot be removed and you need more volume.
