Default Clip+ Bricked? "FAT is corrupted"

This message comes up after Sansa and flower: "FAT is corrupted. Please connect device to PC and". Then shuts off after 3 seconds. Cannot see anymore. This on a new Clip+ less than 2 days old I am not a newbie to Sansa players. This is my third Clip+. I have tried resetting numerous times. version is 01.02.17A. I have searched this forum and Sandisk forum. When I connect to PC, I see as described and hear that something has connected but I don' see anywhere on my Windows 7 that anything new is there. The 16g card I was using has been tested on anther 4g Clip+. The only unusual thing I noticed of this player was after I first connected, was it needed to search and find a new driver. This is strange because I have 2 other 4g Clip+ players and did not think this should have come up. Anybody have this problem? I wanted to ask before I return the unit.

What happens when you plug the player (turned off) into your computer? Have you tried forcing MSC mode (holding center or REW button while plugging it in) and formatting it or manually re-applying the firmware?

Welcome to ABi

I wouldn't mess around with it. I'd send it back. Why spend your time and possibly lose money on something that didn't work as expected from the first connection? As you say, you've done this before and know how it should have reacted to the original connection. It didn't work that way and isn't working at all now. I wouldn't think that playing around with a possible lemon would be the best way to deal with this.

I've found that my electronics tend to last a long time as long as they performed properly for the first few weeks. The few times I've had things die on me was when I didn't act decisively and decide to dump something that didn't perform acceptably from the start.

Get rid of it.

Default Success!!

I forced the MSC. But never noticed. My PC could not figure out what USB port it was in. It was sluggish when reading the port it was plugged into and it was recognizing a port that nothing was plugged into. STRANGE!! A window came up saying it wanted to do a restart. I was confused because I had not done anything to warrant a restart. After I thought a bit, I did a restart and after I plugged in the player. It was not immediately recognized. A window came up after a while and asked me if I wanted to format the device in the Clip+ USB port. I figured Why not? It took longer than I expected, but it finally finished. I unplugged the player and it was ready to go! It was obviously empty of any files, but it was in MSC mode and it was literally begging me to load it up. Need to put this procedure in the files. I have had few problems I could not figure out on Sansa players. And now with your help I have renewed confidence in Sansa players and their simplicity. This particular player and six !6g cards loaded with music will be a gift for one of my best friends. He found some crappy player from Walmart and had some one load it with music. He wanted me to replace it all after a while. I did that and he was happy. I knew he would be back, so I planned this "gift". He can't ask for music he did not have already. H has no PC and is very old school and poor. My friend for 30 years deserved to have access to all the music I have gathered. Does anyone feel I have broken the law for sharing files? In the 70's I used to record records on to 8-tracks so I could listen to them in my car driving to high school. Anyway I am happy and celebrating with a beer or more. Have a great day ! ! !

Congrats on bring it back to life. Hope it lasts your friend as long as your friendship.

Whether or not you've broken any laws in giving your friend the files you had usually depends on your location. In most places you can't give copies legally so as long as you still have possession of the originals. I'm not a copyright lawyer and I don't know of any that post here so I'd take any advice from any members here with a grain of salt.

We also don't discuss the trading of copyrighted materials here. Let's not have any further discussion in that area, OK? We'll assume you're going to check into that and do what the laws dictate in your area so we won't need to discuss that any further.

Sorry for touching that subject. Where can I find a discussion about it? My teenage family do no not know about this, so they do not know any laws are broken. I have watched the laws from a distance.

No need to apologize. It's not a big deal.

If you take a look at the Wiki article on Ripping you'll see there's doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules on what's legal and what isn't. What's legal some places, isn't in others. Also what's legal today may be illegal tomorrow depending on the results of legal proceedings.

Given that, the site's rules were made to err on the site of caution.
Quote:
  • Discussion of illegally trading copyrighted material is strictly prohibited and may result in a ban.
If there's no discussion of trading of any copyrighted materials there's no way for it to wander into areas that might lead to legal problems for the members or CrowdGather. By not allowing discussions of trading copyrighted material we don't need to worry about what's legal and what isn't.

All I am saying is that if my computer literate family is not being informed on laws because they are not discussed on this forum and others then how are they to find out except from an informed friend or relative that might allow shared material. I do not think the cybey news gives us a readily update.

Is there a site that I can discuss this subject?

Default Update

My friend played the player for 2 hours and then received low battery message. We traded so I could experiment. I followed aadvice from Skandisk forum and randomly run my thumb on the buttons until I saw "refreshing media". Still testing , but it seems to have done the trick. He said he was getting not enough space for music message and then off. I am jamming to Beyonce and Metallica until battery runs down. Later

There was a post added here from someone that's weak on the idea of the concept of not discussing trading of copyrighted materials here. It's been deleted.

Either the problem in the OP has been solved or it hasn't. Leaving this open will probably attract other misguided attempts to give advice that may or may not be accurate. The best way to deal with that is to remove the temptation.
