Arrow Right Touch Screen, 64GB Flash, and under 250?

I'm about to buy an MP3 player for my car. I think the best would be a touch screen model, with at least 64GB flash memory.

So far, the iPod Touch is at $266.

Is there anything like it for less?

thanks!

Where did you find a 64GB Touch for $266? That's about what you usually find a 32GB version for, the 64GB is generally about $100 more.

A Cowon J3 32GB and a 32GB micro SDHC card is around $300.

That $266 64GB Touch is probably used or a refurb.

Just wondering, why would you want a touchscreen player for behind-the-wheel use?

For in the car its easier to swipe and put the hand back on the wheel than scroll with a button when you're using a mount for the player

266 is a refurb yes, but it is known that apple refurbs are really new products.

There is the option of the ipod classic for 220, wich has 160gb hard drive, but i do not think that cars + hard drives get along so well.

False. Hard drives in audio players can take more shock than what people think. When I go out in my car the iPod hard disk players are the only ones I use, and have yet to encounter any difficulties.

That they can take more shock than people think could be. But there is no way that a hdd based player would be tougher than a flash one.

The other thing is that I *think* that is much easier to use a touch screen, than a click wheel.

Not necessarily. With a button based player, there are several function that can be performed on the blind, unlike a touch based player where your eyes must come off the road to make the selections.

This is what I was thinking when I asked. I can understand being able to swipe, but it's easier to skip forward/back, pause/play, and volume up/down without looking on a tactile player.

Right, next, previous, volume are probably easier with the click wheel, but choosing artist, album, song much better with the touch screen.

Anyways, alternatives to the $266 64GB ipod touch?

Alternatiives to the $220 160 gb ipod classic?

HDD intended for mobile use (especially the 1.8" models) have several means of protection from falls, drops and excessive vibration.

One can construct a 240GB iPod Video (5.5g) from an 80GB version by using a specific Toshiba 1.8" drive. Same thing for the Cowon X5L with an IDE/ZIF adapter. Another possibility is a 256GB 1.8" ZIF SSD in either device. However, the drive alone would be double the budget.

Toshiba MK2431GAH (all over ebay)
Libmart ZIF adapter (for CowonX5): http://libmart.co.kr/mart/mall.php?c...y=view&no=4166

Although Libmart (I think) indicates that they have zero quantity.

OK, that thing is about 130 dollars, a video ipod is around 60, used. so we are at 190. The adapter another 10, we are at 200.

I think I rather have a new, 120GB classic for 220, with one year warranty. Even if 240gb is cool, 120GB is more than enough for my car.

There simply aren't many other PMPs of that capacity at that price. The Cowon X7 is a 160 GB HDD touch screen PMP that comes close to what you specify but it is HDD based. It costs about $30 more than your budget so that may also be a deal breaker.

There's a considerable step up in battery life and capacity but the screen quality would be a step down. It's the only one I can think of you may want to investigate as an alternative.

The name of the site is anythinbutipod but for me it's more about finding viable alternatives than disliking a particular brand. If there were another PMP I knew of that met your criteria I'd be more than happy to recommend it. It this instance that doesn't appear to be the case. Someone else may chime in with an alternative but TBH the 64 GB Touch is probably the best fit using your initial criteria .

That is what I thought, but wanted to validate.

So, it looks like today there is no other PMP that can match, at the same price:
1) iPod Touch 64GB (apple refurb) for 266.
2) iPod Classic 120GB (apple refurb) for 223.

I'm right? Anybody else can comment?

By the way, I had big hopes for the Samsung Galaxy line, but the 8GB, is alreadi 30 bucks more than the touch 8gb. Advantage here would be that i can add a microSD.

But there is no 64GB microsd, so it looses again against the touch 64gb.

I really like the ipods, the one thing i don't like, is using itunes.

Just as a note, you can get a refurbished iPod Classic 160GB or 120GB for cheaper prices on ebay and even brand new ones on ebay for cheaper prices. The Classic's parts are cheap as hell, thats why the seller's on ebay sell the entire refurbished product at cheaper prices than straight from Apple and at the same quality as well,so no need to pay more for the same.

And to the iTunes thing,iTunes is NOT required to sync music to any of these devices, you can use other sync software for that.

'But there is no 64GB microsd, so it looses again against the touch 64gb."

There is a 64GB micro SDXC card, however it is $220. Some claim it will work fine in devices with an SDHC card slot if it is formatted as FAT32. i'll pass.

A cheap way to have 64GB+ of flash memory storage in players is to buy two 2GB Clip+ players for $30 each, and put a 32GB microSDHC card in each. Total cost is around $140.
