Dream Theater's new album

Here it is.

It's called A Dramatic Turn of Events. Their first album without Mike Portnoy pulling all the strings, and I don't have high hopes, sad to say. I love Dream Theater, but I'm afraid that without their lead song-writer and all around drum-god, they might be a little, eh, rough. We'll all see come September 13th.

- Queensryche coming with a new one;
- OPETH coming with new stuff..

As for DT, I totally understand where you are coming from. Yeah, Portnoy wrote a lot of stuff, but really, Petrucci/Myung/Rudess all contribute heavily. And yes, Portnoy is a monster on drums. Still, IMO, the area where MP will be most missed is on the PR front - MP was for sure the frontman for DT in terms of media/web/DT promotion/etc...

I for one look forward to the new release. Mangini is soooo psyched to be in DT and he is equally a monster drummer. I think/hope/predict that the new DT with MM will give the band a shot in the arm - new blood in a group that has been together is cn be a good thing for [major exception: post Roth Van Halen...]...

Despite the fact that the awesome Mike Portnoy is gone, I still have some hopes. I'll order it the first day it comes out.

lol, thanks. Will have to decide if this purchase will be Amazon download or CD.....the last couple of albums I downloaded have been excellent quality @ VBR V0, same as if I were to rip it myself. Plus free online backup. I'll have to wait to see the price differences.

Lol ok I was pissed for other reasons when I wrote that.

I don't mean to belittle any of the members of the band (because they're all pretty awesome) or Mike Mangini (cuz I've been listening to a lot of his stuff on youtube, and I'm convinced he can equal Portnoy's prowess), but I see this playing out one of two ways...

1) The band sounds exactly the same. I wouldn't mind it terribly, but I really hope they don't just recycle music (like they did with This Shattered Fortress on BCaSL) because that was pretty boring...

2) They go in a completely different direction. Highly unlikely, IMO, but could happen. Whether it would be good or bad, who knows.

Either way, I REALLY want this to be an awesome release. DT is the band that got me into good music, and I would love to have some new material to use with my new phones.

@stein: I see one more possibility, which will probably be the case - they will sound very similar to "normal"/classic DT but just different enough in terms of lyrics/arrangements/mix to stand out.

DT have been around for so long and they definitely not stupid. They obviously know what a huge deal this transition is and how every DT fan knows about it.

For this first release post-Portnoy I think they will play it pretty safe for the most part.

Welcome, TDS, to the club. I agree, they are simply amazing, any way you look at it.

The new album should be amazing as well, because from what I've read, the whole band is recharged.
