New Archos Gen 9 Tablets slated for 2H 2011

I just found out about the new Archos lineup and i think it's quite an impressive showing, if they succeed in delivering what's promised:




6 tablets from 5" to 10"

-TI OMAP4400 Dual-Core clocked at 1.6 GHz (with PowerVR SGX540? or better)
-3G
-PixelQi capacitative touchscreen display
-Android 3.0 Honeycomb
-probably up to 32 GB Flash or 250 GB HDD

If they actually come out with a capacitative screen for their devices I think they have a real competitor to the current tablets.

gen 8 IT 70 and 101 already have a capacitive digitizer, the most exciting thing for me would be the Pixel Qi Display, which will make that thing have a matte/non-glare display hence improve visibility and it will be readable in sunlight, and that's a game changer. also quality in general should improve AND i expect battery life to improve as well, or be on par with better cpu/gpu performance.

Last night, I was at a Best Buy, looking at the 43. I had it in my hand, and was almost going to buy it.

But we were going to a movie right away, so I didn't get it. I guess it's a good thing I didn't, because these may turn out to better ones than the current gen.

The fact that I can pop in a 3G connectivity accessory is a win IMO.

But then we have the usual Archos quality to worry about. They may have gotten better with the 43, but it's still something they're known (or should I say, notorious) for.

Hands-on testing will be required. If Archos would like to calm my fears, please a demo unit as soon as possible, and I'll start trying it out.

I noticed in the above video that they touched on "wide viewing angle", which was a real problem with the gen-8 10.1 tablet. The flash versions are roughly 1/2" thick, and the hard drive versions are still thicker. These may be screamers, and I know they'll have Archos' traditional codec support, kickstands, and plastic-over-steel bodies. Yet it's the "feel" of these things that will loose ground to the thin and light tablets out there.

If you're still waiting to pull the trigger on an Android 3.1 tab, decision day may be coming soon. Back in June, Archos revealed two G9 models: the 8-inch 80 and the 10-inch 101. Well... in case you needed time to save up a little extra dough from your paper route, pricing has been revealed ahead of the September release. The smaller of the two tablets will start out at $299.99 and the more stout of the pair at $369.99 (both 8GB base models), a cool Jackson more than originally reported. Just as a quick refresher, keep in mind that beastly 250GB options are available for both, boasting Seagate's 7mm Momentus Thin HDD technology. You know, if you're wanting to carry around your entire Metallica bootleg discography on one of these bad boys.

prices range from 238 Euro for the 80 G9 8GB Flash version
(which would translate to $342, but as always, those prices aren't telling anything about international/US prices)

to 380 Euro ($547) for the Archos 101 G9 250GB HDD Version.

as there are only by two e-tailers yet, prices are likely to decrease quite a bit.

Looks like they've backed down on the speed: "Features a dual core processor running up to 1.5GHz"

Was 1.6GHz in the early announcements.

Archos confirms that there was a typo on their website over the weekend. All Archos 80 G9 in 16GB and 250GB and Archos 101 G9 in 16GB and 250GB will use the OMAP4460 1.5Ghz processor. Thus 50% faster than the iPad2 and Tegra2 Honeycomb tablets such as Xoom and Asus Transformer.

PixelQi capacitative touchscreen display--definitely what I'm looking for so long. This display feature would make Gen 9 become a real fantastic device. Though Samsung launched several tablets with so called Amoled display, it's not so good as described.
