Help How do you know if your HDD needs replaced???

My Z30 was the first zune i ever bought, and i still would like to use it. About a year ago it started acting up and i deleted the firmware but when i when to go update it it wouldnt update. The update stopped 2% of the way through the second step and gave me an error code. Ive done everything i could and still does the same thing. But my question is, do i need a new hard drive or mainboard???Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a hard drive issue. When you are updating can you hear any unusual noises (i.e grinding)?

Also when you are updating you'll notice a white bar at the bottom. Are you sure you don't see the bar progressing, even at the slightest? One may think updating would be quick, but with M$ you never know. I originally had an issue with updating the firmware and thought it froze. I know I had issues and to update the firmware multiple times.

Yea, it makes grinding and clicking noises. No, the bar completely stops at the same spot of the same step every time and it automatically quits the update and gives me and error code (cant remember code)

Sorry to break the news, but your HD is dead/dying . . . but you already knew that?

Your options
a) buy a new HD and install yourself (not really worth it for a 30GB)
b) send out and have a new HD installed [i.e. rapidrepair.com] (not really worth it for a 30GB)
c) buy a new player (If you like Zunes, get the 80GB)

Good luck.
