I just bought some headphones that have a 6.3mm male end, which of course won't fit into my 3.5mm laptop headphone jack.
While I was thinking of buying an adaptor, like so: http://www.cablestogo.com/product.as...=119&sku=40636 I was wondering if there were any recommendations for these two questions I have: 1. What stores generally sell such things? 2. Are there any special considerations I might want to keep in mind while deciding the kind of adaptor i'm buying? 3. As the 6.3mm male end I am using is gold plated, will an adaptor i plan to use to go into my laptop somehow diminish the sound quality? (thus special considerations) Thank you all for any help. There are no special considerations, just get the cheapest adapter you can find. The adapter you linked to is perfect, so shop away.

I would personally just buy a new 3.5mm jack for it and sodder it on myself or then build an adapter cable for it.
I mean when you add that big adapter thing to the already big 6.3 jack, your going to have a pretty big plug Which can also cause damage to the audio socket if you for example hit or bump the side of the jack while its inserted. It'll basically be a big lever, and you wont need much of a bump to cause damage.

The Sennheiser or Grado adapters won't put any unnecessary strain on the jacks, I'd be using those instead of a one-piece solution.

It isn't just about the size of the plug. Most headphones with a large plug will not work well with a low power portable. They might either have a high impedence or low efficiency. Typically when a headphone will work with a low powered portable, it will have the small sized plug, and perhaps might include an adapter to fit the larger jack.
You didn't mention which headphone you have. If it is not efficient enough or the impedence is too high, you won't get enough volume when you connect it to your laptop. Even if it does get enough volume, you might get better sound quality using a more efficient headphone(so the laptop's headphone amp doesn't need to be cranked up so high). |

Just push harder, I'm sure it will eventually go in.

I have the sennheiser HD485, which has a relatively low impedence of 32 ohms. i've heard of people working on the computer with them so i was actually surprised that they didnt come with an adaptor already for a 3.5mm socket
