'cause Shure can't be improved! - short of buying a better pair of Shure....
Anyway, so before i got my Shure SE530s, I had many different brands of earphones inc. some UE Superfi 5s. Once I got the 530s, i really thought it's impossible to improve on these (perhaps UE Custom Pro.11s?) so hadn't been tempted by any other phones since... but, i decided i didn't wanna use my 530s at the gym (fear of damage) and read a review of the Klipsch Image 10s and primarily 'cause it said 'light weight' and i'd always been attracked by the design, i got 'em. Well they are just terrible! I mean just rubbish! This isn't a review of those Klipsch so i'll leave it at that - but then I remembered how I'd improved my UE 5s... So, UEs, like the Klipsch have silicone ear buds and they turn out to be useless for sound isolation. The Shure have the 'squishy' foam buds which are just great for sound isolation. So I'd taken my UE 5s, cut up a set of the ear buds to get to the spindle (different size to Shure), cut up a pair of Shure ear buds to get to the foam, and stuck the two together - presto hey - instant sound improvement for the UEs (and better fit/comfort)... I was super pissed with my Klipsch 'till I remember this trick. So, took off the silicone buds, put on a pair of squishy Shure buds (fortunately they fit) and... Seriously, it's you've got a pair of phones and sound isolation is nothing special - and so sound isn't what it could be - try this fix -- cheap and it works!

Well the Klpisch silicone tips are by far the best silicon tips on any IEMs, but if you prefer foam, you prefer foam. I just like the instant gratification of using silicon tips, dont need to check for filth and disease every time you insert them in
Plus I've found that the single flange klipsch tips are one of the best isolators available, just as good as Etymotic tri-flange tips, however I think thats more to do with the build of the klipsch, which are aluminum/rubber over the etymotics which are hollow plastic. Foam tips generally are as good as the body of the IEM itself can isolate. So with my Altec Lansing IM716's I found that using tri flange tips and foam tips I got pretty much the same results, the sound most likly was entering in from the iem housing itself. Havn't tried my X10's with Foam tips, but I'll consider it, if I ever see shure tips for a reasonable price.Anyway, people like different things, I personally didn't like the Shure sound (Atleast not consideirng how jmuch they cost) when I tried the 530's, but liked the Klipsch sound for their price. It isn't perfect, but got them for their size and comfort first and foremost. |
