This should go well in the "other gadgets" forum. I assume some of you are into photography. So post some good photos you took - not necessarily DAP-related, just nice looking ones.
Make sure to resize your photos to a maximum of 920 pixel width, so you don't break the layout of the site. Don't upload the photos to our site, host them on some free site for proper embedding (Photobucket, Imageshack, Flickr, etc). Technical info is optional, feel free to ask if you have any questions. And please, do not quote images if they've just been posted a few posts above. I'll get this thing started... ![]() ![]()

It's a Canon EOS 40D with EF-S 17-85 lens for the two cityscape photos, and an (old but very good) Olympus C-5050Z for the flower macro.

I' not very good at it but I do like taking pictures once in awhile.
This looks bad because I lost the original and I recovered it from Face Book. ![]() I not sure which one looked better so here is both of them. ![]()

And of course, the field/irrigation pic is my favorite as you already know. Love the DOF and crisp colors on that one.You don't need an expensive camera to take good pics - but you certainly need one that can shoot RAW instead of JPEG, and an image editor/importer that handles RAW files well. For example, many inexpensive Canon cameras are supported by the open source CHDK firmware. This firmware enables RAW mode and lots of other features on those cameras, making them quite a bit more "professional".

What's wrong with JPEG?

Editing JPEGs is like editing MP3s, editing RAWs is like working on the original multichannel WAV recording of a song.
With RAWs you have non-destructive editing and can correct your camera's flaws via software - something that's impossible with JPEGs. You cannot have the image quality I posted above from JPEG sources. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format#Benefits

![]() Oh, one more thing: what digital camera under Ł100 would you recommend? I've been searching around but know very little about cameras.

The best camera is the one you have with you. I've had a couple of big compact cameras which are half way between small cameras and DSLRs, but sold the latest one recently because it's simply too big and bulky. I've taken more personally memorable pictures in the weeks since I bought a Casio EX-S880 cheap pocket cam than in the year I had the previous cam, a giant Canon A650. With a multiple of at least 5. Sure its fun to play with pro equipment and take "wallpaper pictures", but speaking from my own experience I end up just tinkering with them when I take them and then leave them in some random folder on my computer to rot forever. Some of the most memorable pics I have are scans of 20 year old mr blurrycam pics. Point being I used to want a DSLR really really bad, but now I honestly wouldnt pay 100 bucks for one.

There's a difference between snapshots and photos where someone made a lot of effort to take them. If you see it as two very different things, both approaches make sense. Of course the "pedantic" approach to create and meticulously edit images is not for everyone, and not everybody cares for the (partially subtle) differences compared to "normal" snapshots - but anyway, this thread should just be about subjectively good photos, no matter what equipment you have at hand, or what knowledge you have in image editing.

I never really complain about my camera. I found it on the side of the road.

I think thats a nice and important distinction to make, seeing as the "sample photos" so far has been more of the "effort" type.
