Try this first:
1. Boot into the Recovery Mode and select Cleanup from the menu. Once it has completed, select Reboot and see if the problem still exists. 2. If that doesn't help and you are ok with losing all of the files (have them backed-up), then I would suggest booting back into Recovery Mode and selecting a Format from the menu. This will erase all of the files on the ZVM, but it will also re-create the ZVM's file system which may be corrupt. Again, select Reboot when completed and see if the problem still exists. 3. If numbers 1 or 2 didn't help or you do not want to lose your files as of yet (;(), you can try reloading the firmware. First, make sure you have a good connection between the ZVM and the computer (make sure the driver is loading fine in Device Manager and that your syncing software is detecting the ZVM correctly). Then download the latest firmware version from Creative's website. Boot back into Recovery mode and select Reload Firmware from the menu. This will erase the currently installed firmware and then prompt you to connect to the computer to install the firmware. This is where you would then execute the downloaded firmware file to install. Again, select Reboot when completed and see if the problem still exists. (It shouldn't at this point unless there may be a more serious hardware issue taking place).

i went into recovery mode to remove the existing firmware and prepare the player for a new firmware load. the new firmware begans loaded but would not finish. the zvm starts to rebuild but would stop short of halfway. Ok, thanks. So the new firmware load worked with no error and upon reboot, the ZVM went to rebuild it's database which then froze and eventually showed "firmware problem" again.... sound correct? Have you tried Formatting before trying to reload the firmware? Hopefully you have you files backed-up or it isn't an issue because you will lose your files.
