Creating playlists on the Sansa Clip

I am about to get a clip and wanted to know what to use for playlists? I had an e280 and remembered I needed to use a third party software to make them...

You can make playlists in WMP... it's easy and straightforward if you ask me.

Did I miss something, or was this not possible using the e2xx? I remember having to download a program made by a user of this board to create playlists before on that device... I don't think I would have done that if I could have used WMP...

This is driving me insane.

I am used to using this ( http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ead.php?t=2381 )

I put the clip in to MSC mode, but that program does not work (I can do everything but save the playlist. (f:/playlist not found or whatever)

In MTP mode, I cannot figure out how to use WMP to make playlists -- it seems to resync/reload the songs when I use WMP... I just want to simply make a playlist from the songs I already loaded on there... but WMP will reload the tracks and create a new file folder structure...

I've tried several different playlist formats with winamp, and m3u's at least "show up", but the song list doesn't work...

Going to tinker some more... I would really love for there to be a way to use the playlist creator linked above in MSC mode...

Or maybe I a missing an easier way to use WMP... I never use that program because I detest the layout...

have you tried it for creating playlists on the Clip and then accessing and playing the playlist. When you say it works I think everyone is curious if it works means in general it is a good tool or it has been tested and works for creating playlists on the device with files that have been loaded using MSC or drag and drop.

Use WinAMP. I works with tracks already on the Clip. And no need to change the mode it's in.

What steps did you take in winamp? And what playlist file type did you choose?

I tried several different playlists and file types in both modes and couldn't get any to work with drag and drop.

Here are the steps I took for creating and populating a playlist on my Clip through WinAMP.

1. Install/open Winamp and plug in your Clip.
2. Go to "Local Media" > "Music" and copy whatever tracks/albums to your clip. (I just right click on the track or album and select "Send to:" > "Sansa Clip 2GB")
3. Once all the tracks are on your clip, under "portables" Right click on Sansa Clip Select "New Playlist...". Enter the name for the playlist and click "OK"
4. Then go through the tracks, on your Clip, and add them to your playlist. Right click on them and select "Send To Playlist:" > "name of your playlist"

That's it. You can make as many playlists as you want and go to town.

I have tried dragging and dropping directly from my local media to the playlist on my clip but every time I have tried that WinAMP crashes. I don't know why but it does.

I don't mean to sound dense here, but I've followed these instructions to the letter and the playlist is created, however when I access it on the clip, it tels me there are no entries. If I use a text editer to view the playlist on the clip, it has all of the songs and they are in the right place. Any suggestions?

Try the updated way in post 10.

OK. I have been playing around with WinAMP and the Clip for a while now as far as playlists and I figured out an easier way to do them. Here you go:

1. Install/open Winamp and plug in your Clip.
2. On the left right click on "Playlists" > "New Playlist". Name it and click "OK".
3. Select "Local Media" > "Audio". Go through your music and drag and drop your music to the playlist.
4. When you are happy with your playlist, drag and drop your playlist to "Portables" > "Sansa Clip 2GB".

Now all the songs will copy to your clip and create the playlist in one action. A little easier than my previous directions. Let me know how this works out for you all. Enjoy!!!

I followed your exact instructions and again, the play list shows up and in winamp and windows explorer it shows all the tracks and the proper directory structure, but when I open the playlist in the "Clip", the playlist is empty. I used to have several Sansa M260s and I've got more than one "Clip" and I have the same problem with every device. That makes it pretty clear that it's most likely not the devices. Apparently, there is a setting on all of my computers or there is something that I am consistently doing incorrect.

I am using Windows XP SP3 and Winamp version 5.35. The firmware on my Clip is V02.01.16A. I'm almost desperate enough to try WMP!! : ) Actually, I tried using WMP and wasn't able to make them there either!

mkduffer, just wanted you to know you are not alone. My son and I have used WMP and we have created his playlist and dragged and dropped to his new 4GB clip but we can't find the list anywhere. We know they installed by the decrease in usuable free space on his player but, again, we can't find the list to play.

Well try using Dilfer's latest advice with Winamp and see what happens.

I Found the easiest way to create a playlist on Sansa Clip, was select the songs you want to create it from (these have to be loaded on to the player), right click & select 'create playlist'.

Defiler, I assume you're connecting your Clip in MTP mode -- is that correct? I prefer MediaMonkey over Winamp for a number of reasons, and I've found MediaMonkey will create and sync playlists to my Clip just fine in MTP mode, but any playlists I sync over in MSC mode show up as empty (i.e. broken) in the player's Playlists menu (and, incidentally, I prefer MSC to MTP for a number of reasons as well...). It would be great if someone (Sandisk?) could figure out a way to make working playlists in MSC mode.

not mtp -- msc mode..
here s the short version.. open clip music folder > open winamp > drag songs from music folder onto winamp in order you want list played > find/click "list opts" button on bottom right-hand corner of winamp > save list and name as you wish to clip

Media Monkey is a very nice all in one but I prefer separate apps for my MP3 work. WinAMP for playback and playlist creation, Tag & Rename for tags, and EAC for ripping. Call me old fashioned I guess...

I think that's a smart way to do things. Using some of the best programs for seperate things is what I do, but I use mp3tag for editing tags in mass amounts.

That's exactly my main toolset as well. None of the all-in-one's provide accurate ripping (EAC & dbPoweramp are the only choices). And I like to keep my files names in sync with the tag info, which is also something that none of the all-in-one's handle (AFAIK).

As to the main question of creating playlists on the Clip, here's the easiest method I know (I use MSC mode, not sure if it's the same for MTP):

1. Use Windows Explorer to drag files from the Clip into Winamp's playlist editor.
2. Arrange files in playlist as desired.
3. Save the playlist to the Clip's Music folder.
4. If you later want to edit the playlist, just drag the m3u file from the Clip into Winamp's playlist editor and repeat steps 1-3.

Couldn't be simpler.
