The white screen will do this when switching to a different firmware line, but if the K5 can still be found in My Computer, then nothing has gone wrong and you should be able to follow the steps posted in this guide by Utew.

I'm having a similar issue, i think. I followed upgrade instructions on samsung's site, with firmware downloaded from samsung site. now when powering on normally AND when it powers itself on when connected to usb it freezes in the middle of the "samsung" boot animation. any way of fixing this?

Note: If during any of this process, your player locks up or fails to connect.. depress the *reset* hole on the back of the player, to clear it.
Even after trying a reset on the player itself? After that, does anything appear in device manager when the K5 is connected?

nope im afraid not, the computer still only recognises the device as a 'USB device' and not as a K5, the device itself remains plain black. im stumped

Good! That's all it should be recognised as right now . Now you may just need to follow the rest of the guide. Depending on which firmware you are updating to, the K5 might be intended to be recognised as a USB Device.

i think u may hav misunderstood, the computer does recognise it but thats it, theres no icon in 'My Computer' and no way of transferring any data into it without the required drivers. i hope u understand wot i mean

Ahh, I did misunderstand. How about opening the device manager (Start > Run > devmgmt.msc), locating the USB device, right click and update driver? If this does not work, you could try formatting it through disk management (Start > Run > Disk Management).

i've tried both but neither seems to work, does that mean my players obsolete now?

I can't think of another way to help the computer recognise the player. Perhaps the drive has been corrupted. Do you know which firmware was originally on the player and which you were trying to upgrade to?
