Default Files Disappeared & Can't Update Firmware

This T9 would have to be THE most frustrating gadget I have purchased in a long while.

1. I can't upgrade the firmware as stated in the forum because I can't copy files to the data directory. When I try to do this it shows a 'no smoking sign' thingy! The T9 shows up as a media device in Explorer. Prior to upgrading the FW from 1.24 to 1.27 it just showed up as a USB drive and I was able to copy files as has been mentioned on the forum.

2. I managed to load about 3GB worth of music onto the player. I have happily been able to sync and update the music as neccessary until now! Now I cannot see my music files in windows explorer, SMS, or WMP! They are still on the device as I can still play them. When viewing the T9 through SMS it tells me there is 3GB used, but doesn't display any of the files.

I am getting ready to bin this device - please help if you can.

Okay, copy the firmware files to somewhere on your PC, then highlight them, copy, and go to my computer. Right click your T9's drive and paste. Unplug your T9 and when you turn it on, it will upgrade the firmware automatically. The firmware files have to be in the root directory, not the DATA folder...
Good luck

Thanks for the reply, BUT the problem is that I cannot paste any files to the T9. There is no paste option! If I just drag the files to the T9, it show the no-smoking symbol (ie: no pasting).

Am I missing something simple here - please help...

It sounds to me like your second problem is causing the first. Try taking these steps to get the T9 to be recognised by windows first.

Thanks for the reply, but this isn't the problem. Windows recognises the player, but I cannot paste any files to it using explorer.

Every time I plug the player in and open WMP, it recognises the player, but doesn't recognise the files that are on it. It seems to treat it as a new player each time I open WMP.

So frustrating as I have to format the player then reload the albums I want.

So did you manage to fix the problem? If so, how?

If formatting the player, once it is connected and recognised by windows, allows you to transfer files, then have you tried connecting, formatting, then dropping firmware files into the root of the T9?

If this still doesn't work, the only other possibility I can think of is either upgrading, rolling back, or re-installing your version of Windows Media Player. Regardless of using the program, it holds roots in the windows OS which effect the way external devices are recognised and utilised. Which OS and which version of WMP are you running now?

Hi

Thanks for replying.

The thing I have been trying to say here is that I am UNABLE to drop files onto the root directory of the T9. If I could I would, but I can't. I run WMP11 and the MTP (i think) version of the 1.27 firmware.

Ever since upgrading to this firmware I have not been able to drop files onto the T9 in Windows explorer. I presume this is because the firmware is MTP? Is that correct?

SO, the question is how do I get the firmware files onto the T9 if explorer won't let me paste files to the root directory of the T9 (I can paste files to the sub folders such as Music, Videos etc).

Surely this is not a difficult task - what am I doing wrong?

Am I supposed to use WMP to copy the firmware files to the root directory as suggested in other posts? If so, how?

Instead of dragging the files onto the T9, double-click on the icon and drag the files onto 'internal storage'.

It doesn't let me do that either. The file structure as it appears in windows explorer is this:

Samsung YP-T9 (CAN'T drag files to)
- Samsung YP-T9 Storage (CAN'T drag files to)
- Music (can drag files to)
- Pictures (can drag files to)
- Playlists (can drag files to)
- Recorded System (can drag files to)
- Text (can drag files to)
- Video (can drag files to)

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for helping out.

So you cannot see, or copy, any type of file in windows explorer, or with a software? Besides performing a reset (by pressing record and the centre button) and formatting the T9 (by right-click and format in My Computer) I can see no other logical solution...

..."and formatting the T9 (by right-click and format in My Computer)"
Whoah! Just wanted to point out, NO ONE should format their DAP through My Computer. This WILL delete important system files, and turn your DAP into an expensive paperweight! If a format is required, do it through the software that came with your MP3 player, in this case, SMS.

The disappearing files seems to have fixed itself. I can now see all the files in windows explorer. I can also sync files using WMP11, so no problems there at the moment.

I can copy/paste file directly to the sub-folders (Music, Pictures, text etc), however cannot paste the firmware files to the root.

So the problem is only that I can't update the firmware by dragging (pasting) the files to the root directory. Are there any other ways to update firmware (i.e via WMP or SMS)?

Thanks again...

Try opening Samsung Media Studio (and download any updates it may ask for). Make sure your T9 is connected then click, 'Menu > Portable Device > Update Firmware'. Let us know if this solves the problem.

'Refresh' and 'Format' are the only options available in that menu in SMS.

Even if you select 'Menu > Help > Check for program updates' ?

Yep. The message box says "Updates is not available now". The last program updates were yesterday - I've rebooted the PC since then and reconnected the T9. The "Update Firmware" option is still greyed out.

It seems like such a simple problem, but is frustrating huh!? Any other ideas?

Only one that I can think of right now. You can follow the process I have posted here to see if it helps. If you don't have any experience with editing the registry, then I suggest you backup the specific branch (By selecting File > Export), but unless you delete something you won't do any damage.
