Default iRiverter profile for D2

Update: Since iRiverter and Badak gives audio/video sync issues with many files (due to badly implemented video processing in the D2) I'd suggest you use MaxSt's excellent D2video or Elviselvis' iLove instead. Both are optimized to work around the D2's sync "bugs".

Do not use iRiverter 0.17 or newer! Stay with iRiverter 0.16!

I made a D2-specific profile for the iRiverter video converter. Just put it in iRiverter's "profiles" subfolder, choose it from the "Options > Device > iAudio" menu and Bob's your uncle.

iRiverter is the easiest, most hassle-free one-click video converter. It's pretty fast, too. And it's free software. Quality isn't the absolutely best, but it's really good enough for the 320x240 screen of the D2, IMO.

Technical details:

For maximum video bitrate I chose 700kbps, but try to use only 500kbps since that's usually enough for a 320x240 video. Only use 700kbps for high-motion video (like scenes with rain or fast moving chase sequences etc).

For audio I chose a maximum of 192kbps. That would be enough for music videos, for most movies and TV shows 128kbps would be enough.

So you're just a fan of the touchscreen and you're using it for music only?

Music and photos(comics). I threw some youtube clips on it just for the heck of it. But yeah, I like the touchscreen thing and I like the form factor and SDHC expansion a lot.

I dunno maybe I'll decide it's not too small to watch episodes on.

Thanks for sharing this. Though I have had problems with WMV files,
after converting those to AVI, they can be converted with iriviter
just fine.

I've been using iRiverter 0.16 until now, it is a simple program you just download, either as an EXE file (that often didn't work) or as a ZIP archive (totally hassle-free, just unpack anywhere and you're ready to go, easy as pie).

I took a look at the new iRiverter 0.17 today. Total crap, I'm shocked at how horrible the new installation system is. You have to download some kinda Java installer to actually get the program. You have no influence whatsoever where the app is installed to. It is really really bad. The installer is hidden in %appdata%\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws\http\Di riverter.thestaticvoid.org\P80\DMdist\DM17 - can you believe it? Who would do such a thing - considering iRiverter was designed to easily implement new templates for new audio/video players.

The commandline to start iriverter is now "C:\WINNT\system32\javaws.exe -offline "C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Administrator\Anwendungsdaten\Sun\Ja va\Deployment\cache\javaws\http\Diriverter.thestat icvoid.org\P80\DMdist\DM17\AMiriverter.jnlp" (for a german version of Windows) - on version 0.16 it was a simple iriverter.exe.

Furthermore, with 0.17 you need an internet connection to even start up the app - it won't work when I block it with a firewall.

Everybody, please use this link to download iRiverter 0.16: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/i...n.zip?download - this version is working properly, and you don't have to put up with all that obfuscated Java nonsense. I'm very sorry about these annoyances.

Do not use iRiverter 0.17! Stay with iRiverter 0.16!

Default That explains it

Thanks, I was wondering about that. Read your review a week ago and then went to the site all excited to get the program. When I saw that Java B.S. it kinda turned me off. Didn't want to hassle with it.

Great stuff, works like a charm!

I'm trying to store as much video as possible without loosing too much quality. What bitrate is recommended. I currently use 500 Kbps for video and 128 Kbps for audio. Should I go any lower?

I usxe the same, but I use jetaudio as it works like a charm. I use 512kbs video, audio is 128kbs. Even at that compression it beats every other video player ^^

Just got .16 installed and it looks pretty simple BUT, what 'settings' are you using for the D2. The program only lists models from Apple, Creative, Iriver etc. - Thanks mrb

Read the first two sentences in the first post in this thread, then download the profile I attached to the first post...

I'm not going to support iRiverter anymore... mainly due to the programmer's very stupid decision to switch to that horrible web-based Java installer - but also because I found BADAK to be superior to iRiverter.

BADAK is also a frontend to Mencoder, producing similar quality in transcoding files. It seems to be about the same speed on my machine, and it has several options I've been wishing for in iRiverter (like direct copy of the audio track without converting, etc).

If you downloaded the ZIP/EXE I linked to: it is the working app, NOT an installer. So there's nothing to uninstall.

Thank you thank you. I had just installed 0.17 and was like WTF!! It only had the X5 profile under 'iAudio' gave you no control over anything. At first I thought I had some malware or something running with that Java business. Scared the crap outa me. I'm going to give 0.16 a whirl now.
