I can second this, on my Clip, (haven't been in my clip+ yet to see if it's the same) the wires are do come off the PCB.

Be careful though, it's a crappy PCB. The traces come off easily.

As long as it's 3.7 volts - no higher, nor lower though in my case, the .1 of a volt doesn't seem to affect the unit - and the same type of battery as the internal - meaning "nimh" or such... it...
