It is definitely the anti smudge coating rubbing off, I work in a research lab so it is very possible that I rubbed something on it and the coating came off.

You will have sound but its not connected right, so it will sound hollow and distant. If you hold the mic button the normal sound will return, which means its a connection issue.

Just to note, miced headphones don't work with the samsung galaxy s series. The poles are reversed because of the tv out functionality and therefore its like your headphones aren't plugged in...
